Nars Insider Jane Richardson
On The Beauty Trends To Watch

Photographed by Wendell Teodoro.

From backstage to brand insider, artist Jane Richardson knows beauty like the back of her makeup-swatched hand. As the Global Artistry Director for NARS, she takes every opportunity to jump across the pond and show off her skills—creating runway-ready looks for Fashion Week, working on editorial shoots for major publications and developing advanced education programs for artists as part of the NARS PRO program.

Sharing the NARS love around the world, Richardson has arrived on our shores to talk all things new—Charlotte Gainsbourg for NARS, Orgasm Collection version 2.0—and reveal the lust-worthy launches in-store for late August (watch this space, beauty junkies!). We caught up with her while on set with digital beauty mag Gritty Pretty, to talk trends and get her expert predictions for what you’re going to want to be wearing next. Put down your beauty blender (for a moment) and grab a pen...you’re going to want to take note.

TMM: You’re currently on tour here in Australia, how would you define the attitude to beauty here as seen on the street? What are Australians doing differently to people in cities like New York or London?
JR: “What I’ve found is that some cities have a stronger street style than others. I like the relaxed attitude in Australia and I think women here have a very natural, instinctive style. The people I have met here so far like to try new things but still keep with who they are.”

TMM: Taking cues from Fashion Weeks around the world, what are some of the biggest beauty looks you’re seeing on the runway?
JR: “In terms of complexion we’re seeing a lot of radiant skin with a focus on light to create a soft, flawless dimension. For colour, it’s all about glossy, bright statement eyes, perfectly balanced by natural complexions and barely-there lips. Another one to watch is perfectly, imperfect bold lips, buffed in as a stain or softly diffused at the edges.”

TMM: How can we incorporate the runway look into our everyday routine?
JR: “Try to find one element of the look you like and focus on that. For the most part when an artist is creating these looks we skip something. A bold lip for example, you might wear it without blush to allow the lip to be the focus, or wear a coloured eye without mascara for a softer feel.”

TMM: Are there any new beauty techniques gaining popularity? What is the next buzz a la “contouring”?
JR: “The new complexion applicators—using silicone pads instead of beauty blenders is an interesting topic of conversation at the moment. As far as contouring is concerned, we have seen a shift towards highlighting for creating dimension.”

TMM: Are there any looks from past eras repeating themselves?
JR: “In fashion we are constantly looking back and referencing the past in the looks we are creating. That said, I feel that this season more than ever is about individuality. An opportunity to use makeup that best suits the individual's personality rather than adhering to a fixed set of trends.”

TMM: If someone plays it safe with their makeup or has a signature look that they rarely stray from, what simple products or techniques would you recommend for a modern update?
JR: “Keep the element that is your signature (e.g. lip) but leave something out from the rest of the face during your application (e.g. mascara) for a more modern take.”

TMM: What NARS products do you always keep in your arsenal? Any new discoveries we should try?
JR: “Skin care wise I always have to have my NARS Multi-Action Hydrating Toner as it exfoliates the skin and helps create a smooth base for the complexion products. My other go-to NARS essentials are Via Veneto Larger Than Life Longwear Eyeliner, Radiant Creamy Concealer, and The Multiple in Copacabana.”

TMM: Who are some of today’s modern muses that are inspiring you with their beauty style?
JR: “I think that Francois Nars has a unique way of showing today's best modern muses and I am totally inspired by Charlotte Gainsbourg and her collaboration with NARS.”
