If there’s one ingredient with superhero status, it’s Vitamin C. This powerhouse can save your skin in myriad ways. ZAP! Dark spots are eradicated. POW! See ya later, dull skin. BOOF! Take that environmental stressors like heat, humidity and pollution. Certainly, the beneficial wonder has come a long way since your morning glass of OJ. It’s a potent antioxidant that fights premature signs of ageing (think: dehydration, uneven skin tone, fine lines, wrinkles and inflammation). It also visibly brightens your complexion and triggers collagen production. The upshot: If Vitamin C is not already part of your skin care routine, it needs to be. Here are some of the leading contenders.
Sunday Riley has a number of brilliant launches this year, one of which is this commanding serum from its C.E.O range. This lightweight treatment contains 15% Vitamin C, a hefty hit of the good stuff, which works quickly to tackle the signs of ageing, from reducing the appearance of pigmentation and dark spots to firming and brightening for happy, healthy skin. This one also has glycolic acid, which keeps the PH balance in check for maximum effectiveness, not to mention it refines the skin’s texture. It’s a smart way to restore a youthful glow, and add a little pep to your step. Next move: the corner office.
This innovative essence from organic skin care brand Juice Beauty is designed to be applied before your favourite serum or moisturiser, so that they’re absorbed more effectively. It’s ultra-hydrating and infused with anti-ageing malic acid (found in green apples), tamarind seed to soothe skin, and alpha lipoic acid to improve texture and clarity. It’s also formulated with ascorbic acid—another term for Vitamin C—to perk up skin and protect from environmental undesirables that cause premature ageing. This one puts the juice in juicy complexion.
When it comes to getting your daily dose of C, order your tropical green smoothie by all means but remember to add a topical version too. This sensorial serum from the Hungarian skin care brand uses a highly stable form of the ingredient to turn back the clock. The milky lightweight elixir, applied with a delicate dropper, also contains a cutting-edge complex of watercress extract, niacinamide and zinc, which works to inhibit the production of melanin, reduce pigmentation and boost brightness even more. Plus, there’s a hit of antioxidant-rich kiwiberry, a naturally potent source of Vitamin C to protect skin cells from photo-ageing. It’s suitable for all skin types too.
Editor’s note: Omorovicza Daily Vitamin C will launch in-store and online on 23 April.
Clean and environmentally conscious brand REN is all about brighter skin days. It already has a mask and a daily tonic, both of which have garnered glowing reviews for their power to transform dull complexions into luminous ones. This latest addition to the REN family promises plumped, toned skin as it gently hydrates and brightens. This is a stellar option for those with sensitive skin, since it uses a gentle form of stable Vitamin C in combination with magnesium to replenish and nourish, plus tara pod extract to reduce redness. Its lightweight consistency makes it the perfect daily moisturiser, and it wears well under makeup too.
We are often told you can’t combine retinol and Vitamin C but it’s myth according to LA facialist Kate Somerville. When used in tandem the two powerhouses are doubly effective—Vitamin C helps retinol remain stable and retinol can clear the path for enhanced vitamin C absorption. Somerville cleverly married them up in this weightless serum that refreshes tired, dull skin while you sleep. By morning you’ll be looking at a tighter, brighter and more luminous-looking complexion. The retinol targets fine lines and assists in improved firmness and elasticity, while Vitamin C stimulates collagen production and evens out the complexion. It’s a double whammy.
The perfect partner to the Sunday Riley Rapid Flash Brightening Serum, this moisturiser revitalises the skin and protects from the visible effects of pollution exposure with an ingredient called exo-polysaccharides. Consider it a shield against nasties like smog or dust that can lead to premature ageing. A hefty measure of Vitamin E keeps skin nicely hydrated. Sunday Riley uses a form of Vitamin C called tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, a derivative of the traditional type (often referred to as ascorbic acid), which is less irritating than other forms and completely stable. That means that sunlight and air do not reduce its effectiveness.
The reviews are in: Drunk Elephant is a runaway customer favourite. It’s spiked with the brand’s signature marula oil, a highly absorbable oil laced with antioxidants, and it helps nourish and rejuvenate skin for a noticeably youthful glow. But that’s not all. The serum is enriched with a host of other supportive players, including pumpkin ferment and pomegranate extracts to dissolve dead skin cells for a smoother texture. It also targets cellular UV damage and promotes collagen production, so you can say hello to brighter and firmer skin.
