Dixie D’Amelio’s skincare picks and Tiktok tips

With a cool 24.1 million followers on TikTok and 10.1 million on Instagram (and counting) Dixie D’Amelio’s social media stardom happened in a matter of months. Sharing videos watched by millions from her hometown of Connecticut, she admits she once just watched videos like everyone else—but it didn’t take long for the content she started creating to go viral. From dances to lip-synching and comedic skits, D’Amelio believes in creating content that always shows her real self. “Being able to do comedy, or skits or just talking on TikTok is kind of my lane and where I stay,” she says.

We chatted with D’Amelio on all things TikTok, what fame looks like as an average 18-year-old and her new role as the ambassador for Dermalogica’s Clear Start range—a lineup of skincare products that all contain active breakout-fighting ingredients and soothing natural botanicals to keep skin clear, hydrated and balanced. Here’s what the TikTok star had to say about the platform that made her famous and her own relationship with her skin.

“I was excited to partner with Dermalogica because they really encourage everyone to be comfortable in their skin. I’ve learned to accept my freckles and acne, instead of being insecure and trying to hide it—I want everyone to learn to be ok with the imperfections they have,” says the TikTok star. The latest addition to the range is their new FlashFoliant, a no-rinse, brightening and clearing foam exfoliator with AHAs and BHAs to gently remove dead skin cells and unclog pores—and D’Amelio is a fan. “It keeps my skin glowy and it’s extra gentle—I like that I don’t have to wash it off, so it’s super low maintenance.” She also counts the Blackhead Clearing Fizz Mask as one of her favourites. “I can feel it working immediately the moment I put it on.”

“For the most part, I’ve had a good relationship with my skin—but I never knew the importance of taking care of it until recently,” she says. The 18-year-old also admits that since committing to a regular skincare routine she’s noticed a big difference with how her skin behaves.

D’Amelio says the trick to going viral is to be yourself and make content you love—it’s certainly worked for her (she averages close to 97,000 new followers a day). When it comes to balancing the fame and living life as a normal teenager, D’Amelio says keeping family and close friends front of mind is an important way to stay grounded. “I surround myself with those people who treat me the same as before when I didn’t have the followers I do now—I think that’s important.” For the most part, her life hasn’t changed too drastically: “my schedule is much busier, and I have a lot of new responsibilities, but I’m so thankful for it all.”

“I think most people find TikTok so entertaining because all of the videos are short, quick and all very different,” she says.” D’Amelio is a fan of videos that show skincare routines especially. “It’s so interesting to see what they use depending on their skin types and goals.” She also draws inspiration from her friends online. “I love to watch [them] and see what beauty or makeup trend they’re creating—that always inspires me.” And finally, her advice to a TikTok novice who wants to know where to start? “Just have fun with it!”
