How to summer-proof your makeup

Brimming with seaside lunches, pool parties and balmy nights, it’s hard to have a bad time in summer. That is, unless you’re trying to prevent your makeup from sliding off your face and into your cocktail. When the weather is sizzling, it’s also challenging to appear polished after the daily commute to work. The upshot: you catch a glimpse in the mirror only to realise your meticulously applied makeup is melting faster than a Bubble O’ Bill on a 35-degree day.

Now is the time to invest in budge-proof, melt-proof and shine-minimising products that go the distance. A primer is your first port of call. For a base that needs to last during the heat of the day and continue to look immaculate after sunset, give Tatcha The Silk Canvas Protective Primer a spin. This velvety balm instantly blurs imperfections and inserts a protective botanical barrier between your skin and your chosen foundation. It keeps pollutants out and oil under control. Even better is a sunscreen that doubles as a primer. In summertime, it’s a lazy girl’s best friend, and given you’ll be out in the elements you can’t let sun protection fall by the wayside. Be sure to reapply your sunscreen throughout the day as well, at least every two hours. Our tip for reapplying without messing up your makeup? Use a beauty blender and your sunscreen of choice. You can find out more about the importance of reapplying and how to reapply here.

Follow with a lightweight foundation and creamy concealer applied sparingly. If you do require more coverage, consider Too Faced Perfect Peach Foundation or M.A.C Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof Foundation. The former has a comfortable matte finish that doesn’t feel heavy or cakey and hydrates the skin, too. The latter is a winner when it comes to all-terrain makeup—it’ll cover you rain, hail or shine for up to 24 hours. It’s surprisingly lightweight, has a velvety finish, and a watertight formula repels moisture from the surface of the face, so not a bead of sweat in sight. To set your makeup, try the latest innovation from Rae Morris. This clear gel-like wonder can be applied on top of makeup to absorb any extra sheen or worn on its own to mattify skin. It’s a clutch must.

On eyes, a waterproof mascara is essential when the mercury rises. Try Eyeko Sport Waterproof Mascara, a longwearing formula that conditions and curls lashes, and won’t leave you with panda eyes when the humidity is overbearing. As for brows, you don’t want those perfectly sculpted arches to collapse, so reach for Stila’s Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Colour. Its smudge-resistant formula can be easily applied using the precision tip for your most natural-looking brows, or try short upward strokes between your real brow hairs for a fuller effect.

For lips, sometimes just a hint of colour in a non-sticky formula is best, and you want your pout to be sufficiently hydrated during the warmer months, too. Mecca Cosmetica Lip De-Luscious Glide with SPF 15 is a popular choice for a reason, offering moisture, a hint of colour and SPF protection. If you want more of statement hue that lasts, Hourglass Confession Ultra Slim High Intensity Refillable Lipstick comes in an array of poppy summer shades and the formula is creamy and comfortable with a satin finish. Opt for cream shadows and cream blushes, as opposed to powder formulas, if you’re looking to enhance your lids or cheeks.

Finally, lock down your summer look with Urban Decay’s All Nighter Setting Spray or MAC Prep + Prime Fix +. Both cast a veil of protection over all your hard work, keeping skin refreshed and looking like you just applied your makeup, no matter the temperature. So, hot weather on the horizon for your next event? No sweat.
