THE IN-TRAY

Everything coming to your favourite streaming platforms this September, and how to match your beauty to it

Remember the days of Video Ezy? Walking down the aisles of VHSs or DVDs deliberating between weekly deals and new releases. Flash forward, and today we’re deliberating from the comfort of our living room as we scroll through hundreds of movies and television shows on multiple streaming services like Netflix and Stan which announce new blockbusters every month. So we figured, why not announce them here and share a suggested beauty product to match. After all, who doesn’t love combining a classic Hollywood flick or TV series with a classic beauty staple?

Pair Dirty Dancing with BYREDO SLOW DANCE EDP (Netflix)

What 👏 a 👏 classic! Patrick Swayze in his prime, that line about carrying a watermelon, an unmistakeable soundtrack—if you haven’t belted out (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life at the end of a wedding reception then you probably haven’t lived—and nobody ever putting Baby in the corner again. A timeless love story set in the summer of 1963, it stars Jennifer Grey as Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman, a young woman who falls in love with dance instructor Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) at a holiday resort. As the title suggests, there’s a solid serve of sultry dancing, a lot of it slow, so your MECCA match for this one? Byredo’s Slow Dance—a sweet yet captivating mix of masculine and feminine with notes of opopanax, geranium, labdanum, violet, patchouli and vanilla. Spritz it on, press play and proceed to practice that infamous lift in the last scene.

Pair Between Two Ferns: The Movie with CDG WONDERWOOD EDP (Netflix)

If you haven’t seen Zach Galifianakis’ web series Between Two Ferns then do yourself a favour and have a look next time you’re deep in a cat video vortex on YouTube (we recommend the episode with Barack Obama). Set literally between two fern pots, the comedian interviews (read: insults) celebrities and things always get awkward; he once asked Brad Pitt if his relationship with (then) wife Angelina Jolie was anything like Ross and Rachel from Friends. In this film adaption of the web series, Galifianakis hits the road to interview ten big name celebs with plenty of cringe moments along the way. The match for this one is definitely Comme de Garcon’s Wonderwood, a classic woody fragrance—with notes of pepper, bergamot, cedarwood, sandalwood, vetiver and agarwood—that wouldn’t be out of place between two ferns, either.

Pair Terrace House: Tokyo 2019-2020: Part 1 with TATCHA VIOLET-C RADIANCE MASK (Netflix)

This Japanese reality TV show follows six strangers who share a house in Tokyo looking for love while all living under the same roof. There are no scripts, nothing pre-planned, just a group of people trying to get along—often they find love but they’re also there to find themselves and find purpose in their lives. A mask seems to be a good fit for this show, especially one from Japanese brand Tatcha. We recommend applying the Violet-C Radiance Mask before settling and watching the drama unfold with the latest group of people to join this season. This popular mask from the brand helps protect and brighten skin thanks to a mix of vitamin C, AHAs and antioxidant-rich Japanese beautyberry.

Pair Forrest Gump with TOO FACED CHOCOLATE BAR PALETTE (Stan)

Forrest Gump depicts the life of a young man (Forrest Gump, played by Tom Hanks), a slow-witted and kind-hearted man from Alabama who faces many tribulations throughout his life, but he never lets any of them interfere with his happiness. It’s the ultimate feel-good film that’s most well-known for the famous line: “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” It seemed fitting to match this movie with Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette; although you do know you’re going to get with this palette: versatile eye looks in flattering golds, browns and champagne shimmers and one of the most blendable formulas going round.

Pair Season 5: Broad City with JINSOON NAIL POLISH (Stan)

Yas queen! Our favourite New York besties are back for (sadly) the final season of Broad City, and it’s safe to say they’re going out with a bang. Created by real life friends and comedians Abbi Jacobson and Illana Glazer, the latest series follows their adventures, sticky situations and always hilarious moments as the pair prepare to part ways for the next chapter of their lives. It seems appropriate to match this one with Jinsoon Nail Polish because a) Ilana loves a mani and pedi with her mum, always opting to BYO a colour for touch-ups during the week (clever!) and b) Jinsoon is a brand born and bred in NYC just like the Broad City gals—it’s a match made in manicure heaven.

Pair Killing Eve with CRÈME DE LA MER THE SOFT FLUID FOUNDATION SPF 20 (Stan)

Killing Eve is pretty much the ultimate game of cat and mouse accompanied by killer fashion and some beauty inspiration from one of the show’s main characters, Villanelle. The show centres around two women: Eve (played by Sandra Oh) and Villanelle (Jodie Comer), Eve is a pay-grade MI5 security officer who dreams of being a spy and Villanelle a volatile assassin. Eve is tasked with capturing Villanelle early on in season one and as the chase ramps up the women develop an obsession with each other. On the subject of obsession, we had to take a moment to appreciate how fresh and glowy Villanelle’s skin is during the series. According to the lead makeup artist on the show, La Mer’s Crème de la Mer the Soft Fluid Foundation SPF 20 was the foundation of choice for Villanelle. It’s a lightweight, pore-perfecting formula that fuses soft colour with La Mer’s miracle broth for skin that’s youthful, natural and looks like you could get away with murder.

Pair Mean Girls with HOURGLASS UNREAL HIGH SHINE VOLUMIZING LIP GLOSS (Stan)

If you haven’t heard, the 2000s gloss trend is back and so is Mean Girls (on Netflix)—so fetch, right? This cult classic was probably one of the most popular films to hit play on at a sleepover and still do this day has us reciting lines from it; “On Wednesdays, we wear pink.” It follows sixteen-year-old home schooled Cady Heron as she attempts to fit into a new school and make friends, quickly learning that high school is filled with queen bees like Regina George, burn books, rules about wearing pink on Wednesdays, and glossy lips in frosty finishes. We recommend applying Hourglass Unreal High Shine Volumizing Lip Gloss to really get into the 2004 mood of this film, and be sure invite all your girlfriends around and re-live the magic of Lindsay Lohan in her prime.

Pair Castaway with SOL DE JANEIRO COCO CABANA CREAM (Stan)

It’s a love story like no other—a man and a volleyball named Wilson on an uninhabited island in the middle of the South Pacific. Another classic starring Tom Hanks, this drama follows FedEx employee Chuck Noland (Hanks) who is marooned after his plane crashes with no other survivors and attempts to survive on the island using the remnants of the plane’s cargo. Given the film is set on a tropical island and coconuts are often the food of choice for Chuck, we figured Sol de Janeiro’s Coco Cabana Cream would be a good match—it’s formulated with a blend of fermented sugar and coconut oil and provides 72 hours of hydration. Slather it on when you watch the film for the full tropical island effect—and good luck holding back the tears during the scene with Chuck and Wilson on the raft.
