THE IN-TRAY

Match your self-care routine to a romantic comedy - here’s seven suggestions

Here at MECCA, we don’t think you need an excuse to indulge in a little self-care. Any activity that we intentionally do in order to take care of our mental, emotional and physical health is a good thing. And during times like this where we’re spending more time at home, self-care can come in many forms. So get comfy and switch these on.

Pair Never Been Kissed with Tatcha Kissu Lip Mask

Copy editor at a local newspaper, Josie Gellar (played by Drew Barrymore) is given the task of reporting what teenagers are up to at her old high school by going undercover as a student. Since she didn’t have the best time when she was in high school—bullied, humiliated at her prom and labelled ‘Josie Grossie’–Josie sees it as an opportunity to re-do everything and correct the mistakes she made. There’s a makeover montage and some help from her infinitely cooler older brother to make friends with the popular kids so that she can write her story. However, Josie falls for her English teacher… and we’ll leave it there. Watch it while wearing Tatcha’s Kissu Lip Mask: it’s a rich jelly mask that melts into a liquid upon contact with the lips and keeps them comfortable, hydrated and plumped up for hours.

Pair 50 First Dates with Sol de Janeiro Cheirosa ’62 Votive Candles

We’re on a roll with Drew Barrymore classics, but can you blame us? Ever since The Wedding Singer, Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler have been making rom com magic with their cute chemistry on screen and 50 First Dates is no exception. The story follows Henry Roth (Sandler) who lives in Hawaii; he meets Lucy (Barrymore) one day in his local café and soon develops feelings for her. Unbeknownst to him, she suffers from short-term memory loss so he has to romance Lucy every single day, hoping that each time she’ll fall in love with him. Our recommended self-care go-to for this film is Sol de Janeiro’s Cheirosa ’62 Votive Candles for two reasons; one: it’ll really add to the whole beach island sensory experience while you watch the film, and two: just like Henry and Lucy’s relationship, you’ll be able to light it again and again… and again.

Pair Clueless with Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Lip Pop

You only have to recite lines like: “Do you prefer fashion victim or ensembly challenged?”, “As if!” and “Whatever!” to know immediately they’re from the 1995 classic, Clueless. You get everything with this film; a solid dose of Alicia Silverstone in some killer outfits, a feel-good soundtrack and all the good vibes of Beverley Hills in the ‘90s riffing on Jane Austen’s Emma. Lead character Cher Horowitz (played by Silverstone) and her equally as stylish best friend Dionne (played by Stacey Dash) are popular sophomores who decide to play matchmakers for two teachers, and then some, with hiccups along the way. A match for this girly flick is Glow Recipe’s Watermelon Glow Lip Pop. We think any multi-tasking product is a must for some self-care, and lips always deserve a little love. This innovative product works firstly as a gentle lip scrub (using coconut flower sugar to gently buff dry skin) and then transforms into a rich balm for ongoing hydration. The unique formula also adjusts to the pH of your lips, delivering your own personal unique tint. Cher would approve.

Pair Sleepless in Seattle with Origins Drink Up™ Intensive Overnight Hydrating Mask with Avocado & Glacier Water

We suggest slathering on a generous layer of this nourishing face mask, settling in on the couch and watching Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan fall for each other in this classic matchmaker film. This cute movie follows widower Sam Baldwin (played by Hanks) and Annie Reed (played by Meg Ryan), who cross paths after Sam’s concerned eight-year-old son calls a national radio station to tell the world how worried he is about his insomniac single dad. Annie hears the call and eventually meets up with Sam. We think any type of face mask application is a good self-love moment and this one from Origins, is especially good for thirsty skin that’s looking a bit lacklustre. So, if you’re feeling a bit ‘bleugh’ inside and out, then this movie/mask combination is a must try.

Pair Suddenly 30 with Slip White Pure Silk Pillowcase and Eye Mask

Picture this: on your 13th birthday you make a wish to be older than you actually are, 30 to be exact, and it comes true. This is the storyline of Suddenly 30 starring Jennifer Garner who plays Jenna Rink. After a disastrous birthday party and a sprinkling of magic dust, Jenna’s wish comes true and she finds herself at 30 as a highly successful New York fashion editor. But adult life isn’t exactly what Jenna thought it would be. We’re taking cues from the scene where Jenna wakes up and discovers she’s suddenly 30 while wearing a silk eye mask, and matching it with Slip’s silk eye mask and pillowcase. You get extra self-care points if you can watch this in bed while you’re lounging on your silk pillowcase, too.

Pair She’s All That with Frank Body Caffeinated Hair Mask

Sometimes self-care comes in the form of hair care. If you’ve been neglecting the skin on your head then it’s time to pop on a hair mask and get ready for the scene in She’s All That where Laney walks down the stairs after her transformation while Sixpence None The Richer’s Kiss Me plays—if you know, you know. The story follows high school sweetheart Zach Siler (played by Freddy Prince Jnr in his absolute prime) who makes a bet that he can make a mousey nerd played by Rachel Leigh Cook to go to prom with him instead and help him win the prom king crown. After her transformation from a nerdy glasses-wearing girl into a stone-cold fox in platform pumps things definitely change, as Zach realises he’s started falling for her. This is the film to watch while you marinate in Frank Body’s lightweight, non-greasy mask—it helps improve the overall health of both your scalp and hair leading to less irritation and frizz over time. Get ready for your hair to feel transformed after you use it.

Pair How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days with NARS Afterglow Eyeshadow Palette

A Manhattan setting and Kate Hudson as a magazine writer who starts dating Matthew McConaughey for a story… you can guess the rest. Hudson’s makeup artist on the set used lots of NARS products to get that glowy look and our update for 2020 is the NARS Afterglow Eyeshadow Palette. Now, applying an eyeshadow look might not always be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a self-care ritual, but we think there’s no better time to experiment with new shades and create a look at home (and grab a selfie while you’re at it). Afterall, self-care is about feeling good and creating a hot eye look with the new NARS Afterglow Eyeshadow Palette definitely makes us feel good.
