And so another season rolls around again with inspiration aplenty for new makeup moves. Here, our AW17 backstage beauty insider’s call on the best in show, how the pro teams worked it, and why you should too.

MECCA Colour Specialist Lou Hansen was our beauty insider working her brushes backstage for shows such as Creatures of the Wind, 3.1 Philip Lim and Alexander Wang where she helped spark the skin, eye and lip-wear trends that will upgrade your Autumn/Winter in a matter of minutes. Lou took notes from the best of the rest and happily shares her intel on all the moves you need for next season, now.

COLOUR-CRUSH LIPS

At Prada, Jason Wu, and Adeam, hi-octane lipstick just became a non-negotiable. We’re crushing hard on fire alarm red, blood wine, and the universal purple that Gigi made magic at H&M. “Use a lip brush to push dense pigment into the lip for precision and longevity,” Lou advises. Blot down the first layer for extra grip, then upload the second like a luxe topcoat. If lip liner’s not your thing, try Lou’s trick: “I love sharpening up any edges with a highlighting concealer and then a little translucent powder over the top to stop your lipstick bleeding.”

RAW BEAUTY

Naked skin was the major headline everywhere from Stella McCartney and Zimmermann to Philip Lim 3.1 and Victoria Beckham. But this is no lazy-girl’s look. “There was a serious skin-prep process at every show I worked on,” Lou explains. “A micellar water cleanse, then NARS Multi-Action Hydrating Toner—which is so amazing for moisture we also used it on lips—then a mix of gel and cream moisturiser for a beautiful glossy effect.” Massage, massage, massage. That pretty flush is your new blush.

“We only covered imperfections with concealer,” she adds. But IRL, where foundation is our friend? “Warm tinted moisturiser or BB between your hands and press in so it melts into pores and is part of the skin.” Just add textured, boyfriend brows. To finish: “Use brow powder for colour and body, then brush the inner portion of the brow up and the part after the arch outward.”

GRAPHIC DETAILS

“Black eyeliner was everywhere,” Lou reports. “The difference this season is that it’s lived-in and edgier and you don’t have to be a super precise to master it.” YSL gave us the danger smudge, Chloé prettified thick black kohl, and Marni made it more than ok to go out in tonight’s eyeliner tomorrow. We love Alexander Wang’s waterlining revival, giving your casual salty-hair-and-denim vibe a cool new place to go. “It’s a bit 90s and imperfect,” says Lou. “The key to making imperfect eyes look right is to have clean, polished skin as your canvas. A messy eye doesn’t have to look a mess.”

EMBELLISH EVERYTHING

Ear chandeliers, yes! Headbands, yes please! AW17 is all about the accessories and more makeup has never been more. Anti-minimalists, throw an Alberta Ferretti party in a trio of eyeshadows, punch up pastels until they are Gucci power colours, exaggerate your eyelashes, and under no circumstance neglect nails because art, texture, glimmer, metals and stick-ons are BACK. The MECCA pro tip for making chaos cool? “Mixing textures and finishes—like a glitter eye, sheer blush and matte lip—will give your face dimension and balance your look,” Lou offers.
