Picture this: you’ve settled down for a night in on the couch, you’ve curated the finest selection of snacks and you’re flipping through the ‘romantic’ movie category on Netflix, ready to indulge in an old-fashioned, heart-warming tearjerker. But being that time of the year, the love is in the air, and you want it to show—so set the mood. Start by turning down the lights—and turning on the romance—and light the wick of an alluring candle, ready to imbue soft, flickering mood lighting. To help you do this, we’re pairing the best romantic candles with our favourite romantic movies of all time. Because there’s nothing better than settling in and lighting a deliciously-scented candle while watching Audrey Hepburn—in that black dress—glide from a New York cab to the window of Tiffany’s with a danish and coffee in hand. Keep reading to strike a match.
A tragic—albeit beautiful—love story between Satine (Nicole Kidman) and Christian (Ewan McGregor) unfolds in Paris during the 1800s. A hopeful writer, Christian, is recruited by a group of bohemians led by artist Toulouse-Lautrec to write a spectacular show for the Moulin Rouge. But first he must persuade Satine, the Moulin Rouge's hot-blooded courtesan, to agree. Eventually, they fall in love (with a few classic love songs belted out along the way), but Satine's mission is to seduce a rich duke so he can finance the Moulin Rouge. If he finds out she loves another, their entire plan is doomed. Our candle pick for this is Buly’s Scented Candle Campagne D’italie—its timeless and extravagant design probably wouldn’t look out of place in the actual Moulin Rouge.
It seems only right to match one of the most iconic black dresses in movie history with our version of the ‘little black dress’ of candles—although this candle isn’t exactly little. Baies is one of Diptyque’s most recognisable and famous scents, which they describe as ‘romantic and mysterious’. Breakfast at Tiffany’s stars Audrey Hepburn (as Holly Golightly), an eccentric, independent young woman who attempts to become a high-climbing socialite with a penchant for high-fashion and wild parties in her NYC apartment. The story follows Holly becoming infatuated with her charming neighbour, Paul Varjak, who is drawn into Holly’s superficial party world and ultimately falls in love with her. Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Baies are a match made in heaven.
Set in Notting Hill, the story revolves around a famous actress (played by Julia Roberts) and a second-hand book shop owner (played by Hugh Grant) who meet one day when she wanders into his shop by chance. Eventually they get to know each other, soon facing the challenge of dating while Julia’s character (Anna) is the world’s most wanted woman, constantly in the public and eye and followed everywhere by paparazzi. It’s an English classic, with famous lines like: “I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her”—all the feels! We recommend matching this romcom with Floral Street’s Rose Provence Candle. Floral Street is a brand born on the streets of London, and this candle will fill your room with dreamy rose absolute, violet and raspberry—the perfect sensory match to an English love story unfolding in front of you.
Set in 1963, this movie follows the story of two young men (played by Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger) who are hired as ranch hands in the Wyoming mountains. During the long months of isolation, the two form an unusual bond, one which they’re only vaguely aware of until one night when it rises to the surface in a passionate encounter. When their time as ranch hands comes to an end and they part ways, the two begin to realise the true depth of their feelings. The candle to light during this is Le Labo’s Santal 26, its masculine, smoky and leathery scent is the perfect addition to this moving film.
We can’t believe it’s been 17 years since we were first graced with this classic flick. Set in NYC, it follows the story of Andie (Kate Hudson) a journalist at Composure magazine who’s inspired to write a new article titled “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”; with the aim to start dating a guy and eventually drive him away using only the “classic mistakes women make” in relationships. Andie's eventual love interest is Ben (played by Matthew McConaughey), an advertising exec who has to prove that he’s the best person to take on a new diamond campaign by accepting a bet to make any woman he meets fall in love with him in just ten days… you can see where this is going. Ben and Andie meet and soon start their quests, neither revealing their true intentions. Light Malin + Goetz Rum Candle while you watch this one, and it’ll almost feel like McConaughey is sitting right next to you on the couch (hey, we can dream, right?).
You know the line in Romeo and Juliet: “my lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand”? Well, the Fornasetti Rosetti Candle is that line in the form of a candle; it’s adorned with the painted lips of Piero Fornasetti’s muse Lina Cavalieri, making it the perfect candle to match to this modern take on a Shakespeare classic. It stars a young Leo DiCaprio and Clare Danes (don’t get us started on the fish tank scene) and follows the classic story of “two star crossed lovers” set in a modern-day city of Verona beach with a soundtrack that’ll have you feeling all the feels.
