How to get a pregnancy glow

Congratulations! You’re expecting a little baby bundle of joy. No doubt, you are also waiting for that famous pregnancy glow to kick in any minute now. And hopefully, you will soon be looking lit from within. But the chances are you will experience some less than rosy side effects during your pregnancy, too. Even women with normally well-behaved skin can experience breakouts, dry and itchy patches, rashes, rosacea, brown blotches, stretch marks and spider veins. The good news (apart from the fact you are about to become someone’s mum) is most of these symptoms will go away post-pregnancy. Here’s our list of soothing products to help you shine through this exciting time.

1

SENSITIVE SKIN

An upsurge in hormones and increased blood flow can make even reliable skin types react to lotions they have used for years. Heat, chlorine, certain foods, fragrances and detergents can also trigger reactions. Go for gentle, soap-free cleansers such as REN Evercalm Gentle Cleansing Milk to remove all traces of dirt and makeup without irritating your skin. You can also try Drunk Elephant Pekee Bar containing Marula oil and honey to soothe your skin and antioxidants to help neutralise free radicals.

2

PREGNANCY ACNE

Increased hormones called androgyns causes the glands in your skin to produce more oily sebum than usual which can block your pores. Use a gentle lactic acid peel to remove dead cells on the surface of the skin. For smoother, softer, more radiant skin try Goldfaden MD Fresh A Peel a potent yet non-irritating blend of lactic acid and fruit enzymes to remove dead skin cells, even out surface texture, promote cell turnover and reduce acne breakouts. You could also try Argentum La Potion Infinie. This is a serum and moisturiser hybrid and loaded with ingredients that repair the skin, as well as a gentle (but mighty) colloidal silver, which kills off the P.Acne bacteria.

3

STRETCH MARKS

Elastic fibres just beneath the surface of your skin break because your body is growing rapidly and stretching your skin. Keep your skin feeling smooth and hydrated with a rich lotion or body oil. Korres Guava Body Butter (used by Angelina Jolie when pregnant with Shiloh) contains sunflower, almond and avocado oils to nourish and hydrate the skin while the Vitamin C from the guava helps stimulate collagen synthesis. For some high-end luxury try La Mer The Body Crème.The Micro-Algae Complex provides all day hydration, Blue Algae Life Ferment helps to maintain and restore clarity, firmness and tone.

4

HORMONE-DRIVEN PIGMENTATION

There is a temporary increase in your skin’s levels of melanin (the natural pigment that colours your skin, hair and eyes). Take cover as UV rays will intensify pigment changes. Choose a mineral (not chemical) sunscreen designed for sensitive skin such as Dermalogica Super Sensitive Shield SPF 30. You could also try Bare Minerals Original SPF 15 Foundation to protect against UV damage.

5

HARD TO TAME HAIR

Increased estrogen slows the normal rate of hair loss. While it may feel like you have more hair, you are actually just losing less than usual. Hormonal surges may also cause the texture to change making your hair harder to handle. If you prefer to avoid heat styling, try Aquis Waffle Luxe Hair Turban which has a waffled texture created specifically for thick, unruly hair. Another option is the Three More Inches Magic Oil—this Argan Oil based product can be used on damp hair to aid styling or dry hair to combat frizz.

6

FRAGRANCE SENSITIVITY

Those raging hormones strike again this time causing heightened olfactory sensitivity. You may find that certain odours make you feel nauseous. Try Josie Maran Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter containing whipped Argan oil to nourish and hydrate the skin and white tea extract for antioxidant protection and repair. You could also try Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream, which is free from artificial fragrance and colour.
