Let’s take a moment to consider the humble neck. It’s held your head up for decades, has given you a place to hang your jewellery from, yet, for most of your life, it goes mostly unnoticed—no one is swiping right on your #nelfie, after all. That is, until one day, in your late twenties, you start to notice rings around it from nights spent propped up in bed Instagram stalking. Suddenly, you wished you’d brought your lavish face cream and daily sunscreen down just that little bit further, just a little bit earlier. Luckily, there are targeted treatments cropping up everywhere to reverse the years of neck-glect.
The signs were all there. We just needed to crane our necks a little to notice. At the turn of the twentieth century, artist Amedeo Modigliani saw the beauty in the body part, famously painting doe-eyed women with elongated necks in romantic images that hinted at African art. In South East Asia, the ancient practice of using neck rings dates back to 11th Century. Historians can’t agree whether this was a way to shield against weapons, or to dissuade the wandering eyes of men from rival tribes. Another popular neck accessory, the choker, has been worn for centuries (see portraits of Anne Boleyn, who tragically lost her neck), and has cycled in and out of style ever since. It reached its peak in the nineties (see Drew Barrymore) and again in the most-recent nineties renaissance (see Coachella 2016). Then there’s Kath Day-Knight’s “chooky” neck, which should have served as fair warning for Gen Y-ers, but probably caused more “laugh lines” than anything else.
As someone dealing with the early signs of tech neck, the end of winter poses a daunting threat. With no turtlenecks or scarves to hide behind, it’s time to prep the overlooked area for its time in the sun. Which brings me to SPF. UV exposure is one of the most common causes of premature ageing, so slip, slop, and slap below chin level. The skin on your neck is thinner and more delicate than elsewhere, so it deserves special treatment and prevention is key. Chantecaille’s Biodynamic Lifting Neck Cream contains a host of rejuvenating botanical extracts. It reinforces and tightens the under-chin area to prevent sagging, defining the jawline and slimming the neck. It has an immediate smoothing effect and reduces the appearance of deep wrinkles over time.
For correcting, Dr. Dennis Gross Ferulic + Retinol Fortifying Neck Emulsion uses retinol to kick collagen and elastin into overdrive. It instantly improves the texture of the skin (perfect for past-life sunworshippers), as well as hydrating, exfoliating and bestowing the neck of your youth. By Terry’s Liftessence Neck Cream is an intensive concentrate of rose native cells that activates collagen and nourishes the zone—smooth on twice a day with upward motions for a taut, toned neck and much-needed tension release.
Time to bring in the big guns? Clark’s Botanicals Age-Defying Neck Cream contains 18 active ingredients including retinol, tripeptides and liquorice root to reverse visible signs of ageing and prevent further damage. It boosts fatty tissue in the skin to fill fine lines and wrinkles, while stimulating cell turnover to tighten, firm and brighten your face’s nether regions. The NuFace device is another not-so-secret weapon for this area, using micro-current technology and specially-designed exercises to lift and firm like an F45 class for your throat.
Now for pampering that elegant, swan-like neck. When it comes to #selfcaresundays, why should your face have all the fun? Knesko’s Nanogold Repair Facial Set contains a targeted mask infused with 24-karat gold and anti-ageing ingredients to pamper, lift, firm and hydrate for a supple nape. If Modigliani’s models were around today, this would be their go-to for sure. As you can see, we’re up to our neck in incredible solutions, so scroll through below to see some of the other targeted treatments we’re loving.
