A sunscreen just took out the Beauty Election Hall of Fame so here's everything you need to know about it

When you hear award-winning beauty, you think magic powders that let your look last ‘til the stroke of midnight, lipstick with tattoo-level colour stay or a mascara so good it looks like extensions. And sure, we’ve got those, but the product to take out not one, but two of the top awards in the Mecca Beauty Election 2020, was a sunscreen: Mecca Cosmetica To Save Face SPF50+ Superscreen. This tells us two things: our customers know their stuff (sunscreen is so important), but also, this must be one outstanding sunscreen to beat out the usual suspects. Here’s everything you need to know about To Save Face, with special insight from (a very proud) Florina Sadikay, Mecca Cosmetica Senior Brand Manager.

It wouldn’t go down like this on RuPaul’s Drag Race, but this SPF was awarded the Hall of Fame: One For The History Books award and the People’s Choice Award, as voted by the MECCA Instagram Community. Yep, those who know MECCA, know To Save Face, and they double-tapped it to a double win. “It’s been a bestseller since it entered the business, and it’s stayed there,” says Sadikay. It was created in 2015 to fill a gap in beauty regimes, “We wanted a product that firstly protected from UV rays, but also looked good and felt good on. We couldn’t find it, so we created it.” Now it’s available in 30ml and 75ml, currently has a 4.7 star customer reviews rating and is newly available in a reef-friendly oxybenzone-free version.

No super-luxe, wrinkle-erasing, miracle elixir will ever do as much for the youthful-ness of your skin as sunscreen. It’s the ultimate anti-ageing product, and therefore, the ultimate beauty product—ever really looked at a baby’s poreless, flawless complexion? Goals. Unprotected sun exposure can cause hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, moles, rosacea and cancer. In fact, 95 percent of melanoma cancer in Australia is caused by overexposure to UV radiation. For extra beauty credit, the To Save Face formula includes hyaluronic acid for dewy hydration, pomegranate extract to protect against free radicals and vitamin E to support the skin’s natural barrier.

To Save Face is completely Australian made and owned, and Aussie’s know sunscreen. We’ve been wiggling away from our parents as they tried to apply thick white versions to our bodies since we were kidlets, but being an Australian-made sunscreen means more than nostalgia. Because of the hole in our ozone layer, and the fact we have the highest rate of melanoma in the world (closely followed by New Zealand), we have strict government-regulated SPF standards. As such, you can really trust Australian sunscreens: To Save Face SPF 50+ Superscreen filters for both UVA and UVB rays.

“You should be using sunscreen daily. But if you wear makeup, you’ve probably struggled to find a sunscreen that works with your routine,” says Sadikay. “You almost expect sunscreen to leave a white cast on your face, make you look greasy, and irritate sensitive skin. It’s often easier to just not apply it, even though you know you should.” To Save Face was specifically created to be worn under makeup—and restore sunscreen’s reputation. “It’s tinted so it leaves no white cast, but also doesn’t add any colour to skin. There’s no chalky or greasy feel and it’s so light and hydrating on the face—like a medium weight moisturiser. I use it in place of a primer.”

This sunscreen gets namechecked by some of Australia’s top influencers and editors. Recently, Sigourney Cantelo, Sara Crampton and Jasmine Garnsworthy each spoke of it being a staple in their regimes. When Eva Chen, head of fashion at Instagram, was last in Australia, her DMs filled with followers telling her to check out Mecca Cosmetica and stock up on To Save Face. Trusting her community, she did just that, documenting it on her Stories. Naturally.
