When it comes to choosing a colour to apply to your eyes, there really aren’t any hard and fast rules; looking and feeling great is all that matters. With so many incredible kaleidoscopic-inspired products to choose from right now, it can be overwhelming when selecting shades. Generally, a good place to start is gravitating towards colours that work well and complement your natural eye colour. We spoke with MECCA Colour and Artistry Education Manager Jen Horsley for her guidance.
If you’re looking to bring extra warmth and depth to your natural colour then opt for burnished bronzes or even a hint of vibrant violet for a head-turning effect. “The ultra-luxe Tom Ford Eye Colour Quad in ‘African Violet’ creates warmth with ease; plus, its super pigmented and you can build colour intensity with it quickly,” explains Horsley.
There’s plenty of complimentary shades to choose from if you’ve got blue eyes, like Laura Mercier’s Caviar Stick in ‘Raspberry'. “Warm pinks complement blue eyes. Try applying this easy, creamy eyeshadow stick and you’ll really see your eyes pop!” Want to go even brighter? Orange and red eyeshadows or eyeliners will make blue eyes even more piercing—like the tangerine hue of MECCA MAX’s Single Shadow in ‘Radical’.
Soft lilac is a great option for green eyes says Horsley. “I love this romantic lilac shade from Kosas, simply swipe it across your lids and blend out with fingers for a subtle way to emphasise green eyes—the perfect everyday look.”
“I recommend enhancing the autumnal tones of hazel eyes with pinky or purple hues,” says Horsley. A palette that has these colours and then some is Urban Decay’s Naked Cherry Eyeshadow Palette. It’s packed with 12 cherry-inspired eyeshadows with mattes, shimmers and high-shine metallic finishes.
If you tend to reach for an eyeliner over eyeshadow, then why not try a jewel tone on deep chocolate-coloured eyes for a point of difference (and a change up from the classic black wing). “Jewel tones, for instance Too Faced’s Killer Liner in ‘Sapphire’, help highlight the rich depth of chocolate eyes. Swipe a slick of sapphire to dazzle!” says Horsley.
Looking for an all-rounder regardless of the colour of your eyes? MECCA MAX’s Dream Queen Palette is the answer. According to Horsley it’s the ultimate fuss-free, ticks-all-the-colour-boxes palette. “Pinks, purples and reds complement any eye colour—so don’t hold back with this everyday staple.” Another vibrant colour that looks great on any eye is yellow. “A bright pop of yellow is the ultimate universally flattering option for a fun take on eye makeup and faking a good night’s sleep! Try MECCA MAX’s Zoom Liner in ‘Canary’ across your eyelids for look that’s sunny and fresh—watch how to do it here.
