Our tips for wearing your (and Kylie Jenner’s) favourite MAC lipstick, Velvet Teddy

Lipstick is notoriously personal. When you find a shade and texture that works, you stand by it — and pray that it’s never discontinued. One bullet with a long (shelf) life ahead of it, is M·A·C Lipstick in Velvet Teddy. The matte, deep-tone beige was voted “Best for Lips” in the MECCA Beauty Election 2020, which means it’s very dear to many lipstick lovers. (And of course, it’s one of our bestselling lipsticks). So if it’s not already in your lip wardrobe, it should be.

To find out what makes the shade such a hit — with customers and Kylie Jenner — we spoke to M·A·C global senior artist Carol Mackie. She also gave us excellent application advice and notes on what to pair it with. Screenshot for later.

Velvet Teddy is that perfect combination of lipstick desirables: single-swipe payoff, creamy but no shine, matte but not drying (thanks to vitamin E) and it stays where you put it. “Velvet Teddy is the ultimate foolproof nude lipstick,” says Mackie. “I always have it on hand when I’m working with celebrities, backstage at fashion week and on set because I know it won’t let me down. It pairs perfectly with every makeup look and suits every skin tone.” Characteristics that make it a product worthy of the M·A·C credo: “All Ages, All Races, and All Genders”.

“I really started to notice that Velvet Teddy was gaining popularity when I would apply it on models while on set, and everyone would stop and ask me what they were wearing! The same thing would happen when I wore it myself. Then it gained celebrity attention (hello, Kylie Jenner!) and it quickly became the name on everyone’s lips.” Literally. “Now, you won’t find it far from Australian influencers Sammy Robinson and Jadé Tunchy’s beauty bags.”

When you’re short on time, apply it straight from the bullet. “It’s a quick, easy way to apply a gorgeous nude matte lipstick without any fuss,” says Mackie. But if you want to do more, you can. “You can also apply it with a pencil; try M·A·C Lip Pencil in Boldly Bare for a liner that will blend perfectly. Or, try a slightly deeper shade to create a multidimensional look and make lips look fuller, such as M·A·C Lip Pencil in Spice or Subculture.” And finally, a top tip for deeper skin tones, “Try filling the lip with a deep-toned lip pencil and tapping Velvet Teddy through the centre to highlight the lip.”
