How to get happy, hydrated skin

We are approximately 70 per cent water. Yet most of us don’t drink nearly enough each day. Dehydration shows up on our skin as congestion or a lacklustre complexion. It also slows our digestion, causing compromised elimination—meaning more waste gets reabsorbed by our bodies.

Of course, failing to drink enough water is not the only problem. Daily doses of caffeinated drinks and alcohol also tax our supplies of h20. And while sweaty workouts are great, it’s important to replace lost fluids afterwards.

Staying hydrated helps support our kidneys remove waste products from our blood and our bodies’ other detoxification processes—which in turn are good for our skin and overall wellbeing.

When we are well hydrated we can also concentrate better, our skin is clearer, eyes brighter and we have more energy.

All good reasons to aim to drink at least two litres of filtered water every day. Investing in a stylish water bottle can be motivating. Keep a big glass handy at work and reach for it regularly. Snacking on water-rich fruits and vegetables such as berries, watermelon, cucumber and celery will boost hydration along with sipping soups, juices and mineral-rich, slow-cooked bone broths.

Seriously plump, glowing skin starts with serious sipping but in the meantime, here are some shortcuts to apply externally for hydrated-looking skin.

Full body immersion

Eliminate dry, flaky dehydrated elbows, knees and legs by immersing your whole body in Mecca Cosmetica Body Butter, a luxurious blend of shea butter, cocoa butter, sunflower and macadamia nut oils for a luminous, all-over sheen.

Give your face a drink

Think of this formula as a long tall glass of water for your face, Mecca Cosmetica Hydrating Moisturiser replenishes lost moisture, boosts radiance and smooths line and wrinkles for an age-defying, radiant effect.

Like ICU for skin

Sometimes dehydrated skin needs the kind of intensive care that only a powerful, antioxidant-rich serum can administer. Drunk Elephant B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Gel is packed with vitamin C to treat photo-aging, fruit enzymes to remove dead cells plus a yaluronate crosspolymer and an anti-aging ChronoPeptide to smooth skin and promote collagen.

Fatigue fighter

Relieve tension, stress and muscle fatigue by harnessing the powers of kelp extract and the skin-loving magnesium with Ren Atlantic Kep and Magnesium Anti-fatigue Body Cream. Apply liberally on those days when you just need a little extra relief all over.

Ready, set, spritz

Spritz yourself happy with Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe, Herbs and Rosewater. Keep on your desk at work and spray whenever you need a refreshing, pick-me-up before a meeting, to revive dehydrated skin, to make your makeup look dewy or to boost the hydration factor in your day and night creams.

Post-sun soother

After a big day outdoors, retreat and restore moisture to dry, sensitive or sun-damaged skin with a mask. Karuna Hydrating Face Mask is clinically proven to increase hydration by 40 per cent after just one use. It’s also enriched with natto (fermented soybeans) to boost skin elasticity while exfoliating dead skin and sodium lactate to help retain moisture. The mask is made from biodegradable wood pulp that retains 50 per cent more moisture than synthetic material.
