The foundation that delivers virtual skin perfection

As someone whose go-to look is a barely-there tinted moisturiser, I was a little nervous about trying the new Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Liquid Foundation. This advanced formula promises full coverage power and “virtual skin perfection”. I associate concentrated foundations with an earlier time in my life. The new me has embraced lighter formulas and ethereal finishes. Thankfully, my fears were completely unfounded. Vanish is no old-school mask. It offers exceptional coverage but remains impressively lightweight. Fancy that.

Housed in a sleek frosted glass bottle, the latest complexion wonder from Hourglass founder Carisa Janes is in keeping with the brand’s polished look and feel. It’s the type of makeup you want to keep out on show, not hidden away in your bag. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because this is a liquid version of Hourglass’ OG Vanish Foundation Stick—a longwearing, full coverage stick that doubles as a concealer. Similar to the stick, a little bit of this Vanish goes a long way. Even more remarkably, you don’t need to prime before applying it. It’s formulated with innovative coated pigments that weightlessly provide full coverage, and these magical little pigments adhere best to moisturised skin—so put down the primer for this one.

When I buffed it into my face using an Hourglass brush, I was instantly surprised by the duality of the formula—the coverage it offered while still feeling feather-light. There are few things worse than a foundation that feels heavy, but I soon forgot I was wearing it. I used three small pumps for my entire face and the finish was like satin, somewhere between a matte and a luminous effect. Ensure you use a brush for the best results. Although it was more coverage than I’m used to, I still loved how my skin looked: smoother, softer, practically poreless. I set it with a touch of Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder and I was ready to rock and roll.

Vanish promises all-day wear, so I took it out on the town. From afternoon drinks with friends to a slice of takeaway pizza, from a rowdy karaoke club (where, in my opinion, I smashed Hotel California by The Eagles) to a late-night bowl of ramen, I covered a lot of ground. But my foundation held, it did not budge. Throughout the night I would stop for a closer inspection—and it continued to look flawless, untouched, satiny, and pretty much as it did when I’d first applied it. There wasn’t even a hint of pesky oil on my T-zone. So, the final word on Vanish? It’s foundation, but not as you know it. It’s incredibly comfortable and ridiculously longwearing. Consider Vanish the makeup version of Houdini: it will make your pores and flaws disappear, and probably have you feeling confident enough to belt out a tune at a crowded karaoke bar too.
