If you can’t go to the gym without wearing makeup… read this

While sporting a Kardashian-style contour and dark smokey eye isn’t our top recommendation for your Saturday morning HIIT class, wearing makeup to the gym—if it makes you feel more comfortable in your skin—isn’t a total no-go. With the right products, and some before and after care, it won’t wreak havoc on your skin either. Here’s how to do it.

Pass on the powders and opt for lightweight creams

When powder meets sweat, caking may ensue. So, your base should be sheer and creamy with the intention of enhancing your skin—not covering it up. Depending on how much coverage you would like; you’ve got options:

1. The lightest touch: you don’t want to look (or put the effort into being) done up, but you do want to look alive and well. Swipe Ilia’s Multistick onto your cheeks and lips, pressing it in with your fingers for a subtle sculpt and hint of colour—easy.

2. You crave coverage: before you go in with your Multistick, sweep MECCA MAX’s Off Duty BB Cream with SPF 15 across your face. It’s lightweight and skin-like but can be built up to medium coverage, and will correct uneven skin tone where needed. It won’t slide off your face as you work out, either. If you’re after a targeted approach (just under eyes and blemishes), Kosas’ skincare-powered Revealer Concealer is a go.

3. Perfection is the goal: a good primer will smooth and blur your skin pre-BB cream, concealer, and Multistick, will help to reduce visible sweatiness, and will keep your makeup in place from warm-up to cool-down. Smashbox’s Photo Finish Foundation Primer won’t fail you, and neither will a spritz of M·A·C Fix+ at the end.

A little brow grooming can make a major difference

Brows frame the face, and whether you’re an avid laminator and tinter, or you haven’t touched your brows in a decade, a quick brush through your arches can make all the difference in how you look and feel. Enter Kosas’ new Air Brow Fluff & Hold Treatment Gel—it comes in 10 shades (even auburn and grey), and has a mousse-y formula spiked with castor oil, vitamin B5 and peptides for fuller, more luscious brows. You can trust your brows won’t budge as you cycle through your vinyasa flows.

An honourable mention…

These two MECCA favourites aren’t technically makeup, but they make all the difference. The first is Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Hydrating Face Mist—a hyaluronic acid-powered spray that will cool you down, nourish your skin and refresh your makeup instantly post-workout. It belongs in your gym bag, alongside the Bumble and bumble Pret-a-Powder Post Workout Dry Shampoo Mist, a unique dry shampoo formula that goes above and beyond to refresh damp, sweaty hair, not just oily roots (it will, however, do that too). It’s a true beauty game-changer.
