Sarah Gittoes and Robert Sebastian Grynkofki, the duo behind luxury jewellery brand Sarah & Sebastian, bring an
understated elegance and modern style to each of their handcrafted pieces. From a converted
warehouse in Sydney, they use traditional goldsmithing techniques to create intricately
designed, limited-edition collections each season. Operating on a made-to-order basis to reduce
production waste, their pieces use recycled raw materials where possible along with ethically
sourced stones and metals.
As part of the new services on offer exclusively at our new flagship, customers will be inspired
by Sarah & Sebastian's expert jewellers and piercers, who’ll be providing ear piercing,
jewellery styling and Soldered bracelets on level one in the flagship. We spoke to Gittoes and
Grynkofki ahead of their highly anticipated launch into our brand new store, which, by the way,
is the largest beauty store in the Southern Hemisphere.
According to Gittoes, inspiration flows from a concept relevant to a recent experience or
interest—plus, she says the ocean plays a big role when it comes to creating pieces. “I
habitually turn to the ocean for my inspiration, as much of my free time is spent in or around
the water,” she says. “In the ocean there is always an intricate detail or unexpected silhouette
that captures my imagination. The concept behind our recent ‘SKIN’ collection formed whilst
witnessing a cuttlefish migration in South Australia and looks to the sensory properties of
octopus and cuttlefish skin.”
Grynkofki explains that as a brand, Sarah & Sebastian have always sought to challenge
‘traditional’ jewellery by rebelling against convention with their manufacturing techniques and
conceptual designs. “We approach our collections in the way that a fashion designer does;
referencing seasonal trends and forecasting new products and ways of wearing jewellery,”
explains Grynkofki. “There is always a fine balance of innovation and craftsmanship; we’re proud
that many of our products have stood the test of time.”
Another thing that sets Sarah & Sebastian apart from other brands is their Soldered bracelets.
“Our Soldered bracelets are permanently and seamlessly soldered onto the wrist by one of our
jewellers. The bracelets feature our signature ‘barely there’ yellow gold chain and can be
threaded with ‘Sliders’ (charms featuring diamonds, opals and petite letters) exclusive to
MECCA,” says Gittoes.
Each bracelet is custom fitted to the wrist and soldered using a micro soldering torch, then
polished. The soldering itself (a flame with a temperature over 3000 degrees) lasts about 10
seconds. “We like to think of our Soldered bracelets as jewellery’s version of a tattoo, as
every wearer attributes their own meaning to their permanent piece,” says Gittoes.
If you’d prefer to treat yourself to a new ear piercing at MECCA’s first flagship, Gittoes
suggests browsing their extensive edit of earrings to curate and experiment with.
“Unconventional jewellery placements on the ear is a trend I’m most excited about— from unique
piercings or cuffs that wrap up the ear.”
Exclusive to our flagship store, customers will be inspired by Sarah & Sebastian's expert
jewellers — providing personalised advice on the piercing style which is best suited to
their style. With styling, piercing and a range of earrings, they'll fall in love with this
effortlessly elegant look.
