It’s winter, you’re in hibernation mode and chances are you’ve already binge-watched all of HBO’s Euphoria. Written by Sam Levinson and executive produced by Drake and Future The Prince, Euphoria is the hypeworthy new high school drama that we here at the MECCA watercooler are calling the Skins of the social media generation. It’s airing in Australia on Fox Showcase and for those who haven’t been able to ‘borrow’ their parents’ Foxtel Now password yet, we’re not going to give too many spoilers on the plot. So, while you might come to see the Insta-famous cast (including Zendaya, Barbie Ferreira and Hunter Schafer) get themselves into all sorts of non-PG situations, you’ll definitely want to stay for the bold, colourful and glitter-filled makeup inspiration. From a quick Instagram stalk, the artists behind these incredible looks are the very talented Doniella Davy and Kirsten Sage Coleman and basically we want to try them all immediately. Here we discuss the best beauty lessons we learned from the show.
Glitter tears are the best cure for dark circles According to the show (and in no way supported by us, ok?)—being a teen and partying like a teen is tough, especially when you have school. Do as Rue (Zendaya) does and conceal tell-tale dark circles with glitter tears. For this look, we love In Your Dreams Chunky Glitter and/or Stila Glitter and Glow Eyeshadows. Pegging this to be the must-have look on the summer festival scene.
Makeup is the best way to express yourself If anyone had the influence to sway you from your beloved bronze tones and into the abandoned colour pans of your palettes, it’s free-spirited Jules (Hunter Schafer). Throughout the show Jules can be spotted wearing any number of colours up on her lids at once. As quoted on Davy’s Instagram, “Express yourself through makeup, however you want, at all times, despite what the mainstream says.” Challenge accepted? Watch our rainbow eyeshadow tutorial and try it now.
The best cure for a bad day? Colour and shine. Again, no spoilers, but in a truly emotional scene for Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) we see a dream sequence where she escapes her reality and appears in a peacock leotard with a matching bedazzled eye look. Trying this next time things get tough with MECCA MAX Zoom Sticks in Teal on the lid and Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner in Spandex on top.
Why stick to one hair colour? Is it just us or does Jules’ chameleon hair colours have you considering changing up your style a little bit more often? Get experimental with your hair colour and try a semi-permanent colour change next time you’re at the salon. Need less commitment? Bumble and bumble Bb. Shimmer Jelly is a temporary way to add glitter to your hair.
Halloween costumes don’t have to be sexy or scary With October 31st just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about costumes. While sexy mouse has probably gotten you through in previous years, it’s 2019 and teens are cooler than that now. All hail Lexi (Maude Apatow), who had the guts to go to the coolest Halloween party of the year as television painter Bob Ross. Who’s that you ask? Well he basically invented ASMR with his show “The Joy of Painting.” Here’s a deep dark YouTube hole for you to fall down.
Wear jewels everywhere, every day If Euphoria teaches you anything, let it be a) internet safety is a big deal and b) face gems have legs outside the music festival—we love these ones from In Your Dreams. For the fiery Maddy (Alexa Demie), Davy created a signature look of rhinestones and cat-eyes as an “elaborate armour” for the “diehard romantic” hidden under her fierce personality.
Lip gloss is back In episode one we get to see a montage of Jules (Hunter Schafer) getting ready for a night out—and we couldn’t help but notice a very Paris Hilton shade of shimmering lip gloss. Instead of digging this shade up from your bathroom drawer where it’s sat since the 2000s, try the trend in a new modern formula instead. 8Wing it in life and your makeup The one place where the high schoolers of Euphoria have it all figured out? Their makeup. Life lesson a la Kat (Barbie Ferreira)? If you’re going to wing it at life at least ensure your cat eye is on point, Stila Stay All Day Liquid Eyeliner got you.
