THE IN-TRAY

Beauty tips from a French makeup icon

WHEN BY TERRY’S TERRY DE GUNZBURG RELEASES A NEW FOUNDATION, THE BEAUTY WORLD TAKES NOTE. WE REACHED OUT TO THE PARIS-BASED MAKEUP DOYENNE FOR THE LOWDOWN ON HER LATEST INVENTION, AND HER ADVICE ON LOOKING SOIGNE.

Terry de Gunzburg, the visionary behind By Terry, has long been a complexion connoisseur. Her multitasking foundations, concealers and cheek colours blend forward-thinking ideas and fashion-forward textures. Her latest release, Nude-Expert Duo Stick, is no exception. It fuses two weightless formulas in one flawless tool—c’est chic stick, non? We reached out to de Gunzburg for her thoughts on beauty.

TM: Why did you combine matte foundation with a highlighter for Nude-Expert?
TG: “As a makeup artist I understand the art of creating a flawless complexion. On one side of the tool is a matte foundation that delivers seamless coverage with a blurring effect, while the highlighter side enhances your facial features with incomparable luminosity. You will love playing with the two textures to create the ultimate glow. It offers sheer, medium or full coverage.”

What is the ideal way to apply it?
“Let your mood dictate the result. You can mix the matte side with the highlighter side if you want coverage, but you can also use it as a complexion corrector or just to add a touch of dewiness.”

What are the complexion products that you use regularly?
“My makeup routine can be very simple, using just one product, such as Nude-Expert. Or I can create a complete five- or six-step look. I start with Terrybly Densiliss Primer, followed by Terrybly Densiliss Foundation, and Terrybly Densiliss Concealer. I add setting powder, luminiser and blush.”

What should women have in mind when searching for a new foundation?
“Foundation can always double as a skin protector. Try a formula infused with skin care benefits instead of a purely pigmented one. This will truly change the way your skin looks at the end of the day. You will notice that it will be more radiant and also less patchy.”

What is the most common mistake women make with their foundation?
“Trying to look more tan by using a darker shade of foundation. You should always wear a shade suited to your skin and warm up with a bronzer like our Compact Expert Dual Powder.”

Your homes are filled with colour and art. Could you live in a minimalist white space?
“When I was creative director at Yves Saint Laurent, my home was absolutely minimalist. I couldn’t stand living with anything other than neutral colours. But when I left YSL, I started experimenting with shades like pink, red, purple and peacock blue around the house in unexpected combinations.”

You’re a renowned collector who bought her first Picasso plate at 20. Do you still have it?
“Unfortunately, not! It was a small ceramic plate from Vallauris. My nephew broke it by accident. Sometimes it’s destiny that allows you to find other pieces.”

Which art pieces have you swooned over lately?
“A sculpture from [my son] Samuel de Gunzburg. It’s a masterpiece.”
