For the team at MECCA HQ (and many likeminded Melbournians), brunch isn’t just a meal — it’s a ritual. It’s engrained in our hearts, souls and weekend schedules, and — more often than not — our Instagram feeds. Being the serial brunchers that we are, we recently found ourselves salivating as we scrolled through our skincare page, discovering that it’s starting to read more and more like a Broadsheet-certified café menu. Ingredients like avocado, acai, mushroom and coffee have seemingly made their way into just about everything, and we’re all for it — so much so that we’ve curated five head-to-toe skincare routines, each inspired by our favourite brunch orders. Ever wondered what smashed avocado and feta would look like on your face? Or if the humble acai bowl truly is the answer to transcending health and beauty #goals? Keep reading.
Possibly the most iconic Australian brunch dish ever — and notoriously known as the rumoured reason millennials can’t afford houses (*eye roll*) — smashed avocado with feta on sourdough is every bit as wholesome and nourishing as it promises to be. Filled with healthy fats, clean flavours and a serve of protein — should it come with a perfectly poached egg — it’s the quintessential dish to kick off the weekend, and, as we discovered, the perfect routine for healthy, nourished and moisturised hair and skin.
If you’re ready for a full-body smashed avocado takeover, start your routine in the shower with Philip B’s super clarifying Peppermint Avocado Shampoo (get ready for seriously satisfying scalp tingles, we know, we tried it), and follow that up with Frank Body’s Caffeinated Hair Mask. Coffee fix? Check.

If anyone knows how to do avocado in skincare, it’s Kiehl’s, so to reap the benefits of the nourishing fruit (yes, fruit), their new Avocado Nourishing Hydration Mask is a must-slather for juicy, replenished skin. As you let the mask work its magic for the next 15 minutes — and to get the perfect dash of soy milk — apply a layer of Kiehl’s Crème de Corps Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter. In brunch terms, this stuff is the Bonsoy of body butters, and will work wonders to banish any remaining winter dryness lingering on your skin. After washing the face mask off to reveal nourished, bouncy skin, apply a less-than-pea sized amount of the cult-favourite Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado to your under-eyes, and treat yourself to that extra serve of goat’s cheese in the form of the Kate Somerville’s Goat Milk Moisturising Cream.

There’s something about a really good acai bowl that makes you feel like you’re glowing from the inside-out, each spoonful confirming that you’re a vision of health, wellness, and all things #instagood — regardless of if you skipped that Saturday morning Pilates class or not. With fruity brands like Elemis, Juice Beauty and Glow Recipe in our product line-up, we knew this routine would emulate those feels, with an antioxidant boost, delivering on hydration, brightness, and seriously glow.

Follow this up with a cocktail of the Glow Recipe Watermelon Moisturiser and Elemis Pro Radiance Illuminating Balm all over your face, blending it into the skin to achieve a glass-like, highlighter-free glow like never before; worthy of the audible gasp that’ll undoubtedly come along with it.
Finish off your face with a layer of our go-to sunscreen, Mecca Cosmetica’s To Save Face Superscreen SPF 50+, which contains pomegranate extract to delay aging and protect against free radicals. Considering the vitamin C and AHA’s present in the mask and serum, SPF is a no-brainer addition to this (and every) routine.

A favourite of the savoury-inclined among us, sautéed mushrooms on toast — especially with a drizzle of earthy truffle oil — makes for a hearty, potent feed that’ll power you through the rest of your day. When done right, mushrooms are a flavour powerhouse on toast, and as it turns out — with a little help from Origins — they’re even better on your face.
Recommended by the masses at MECCA HQ, Origin’s Mega-Mushroom range — formulated with Dr. Andrew Weil’s Mega-Mushroom blend — delivers a complete skincare regime to combat inflammation, aging, redness, and any weakening of the skin. The blend includes reishi mushroom, a Chinese medicine staple which is believed to possess life-extending properties and skin-soothing superpowers — slightly different to the button mushrooms on your plate. For the full fungi-factor, treat your skin to the full regime — mask and all — starting with the Mega-Mushroom Skin Relief Micellar Cleanser, and ending with the Soothing Face Cream. Each use will reveal calmed, strengthened and hydrated skin, with any redness you might typically experience, visibly reduced. Used on the long term, this range can seriously step up your skin game.

A hearty bowl of porridge is the food equivalent of a big old bear hug, and this skincare routine? Basically an all-embracing hug for your face. Our porridge pick from Bawa is complete with nuts, shaved coconut, berries, pear, banana and honey, and in the spirit of goldilocks, is *just right* — like its skincare counterpart will be too.
Start with the RMS Raw Coconut Cream to cleanse — it contains nothing but pure, unrefined coconut oil, and is designed to cleanse the skin of excess oil, dirt and impurities (according to Rose-Marie Swift herself, they use it to sashay away the layers and layers of makeup on RuPaul’s Drag Race). Oats are our key ingredient here, so to get your dose, slather the Summer Fridays Overtime Mask onto your fresh face, letting it brighten, smooth and clarify for the full ten minutes before washing it off. It’ll do all of the above, and some.
For a serious moisture fix, apply a few drops of the Sunday Riley Juno Antioxidant + Superfood Face Oil to your face, a glow-getting oil brimming with antioxidant-filled blackberry, raspberry and blueberry, and follow it up with Go-To’s amla berry-rich Very Useful Face Cream, which will be, well, very useful in hydrating and smoothing your skin.
At this point your face will be nourished, glowy and ready for the day, and all you need is that sweet, sweet drizzle of honey. Josie Maran’s Divine Drip Honey Butter Balm is rich, silky and every bit indulgent, with antioxidant-rich clover honey to lock in moisture and protect against environmental stressors — making it the perfect choice to glide all over your body. Finish off the routine with quick swipe of Skyn Iceland’s Berry Lip Fix, and you’re good to go.
The humble bowl of fruit and yogurt is often overlooked on a menu of gems, but when it’s done right — especially on a spritely spring morning — it’s unbeatable. We like to think of yogurt as the ice-cream of breakfast, made even better by the tart, gut-healing probiotics that live within it. According to Gallinée founder Marie Drago, whose skincare line harnesses the benefits of fermentation (lactic acid) and good bacteria (prebiotics and probiotics), “people now know that we need good bacteria in our diets, and the nutrition side of things is transferring to peoples’ idea of skin quickly. Clean is nice, but we don’t need to be sterile — we need good bacteria to feed, nurture and balance the skin.”
