Some beauty products are unforgettable favourites, staples we take with us everywhere, never failing to use up ‘til the last drop. Other firm favourites, however, suddenly drop out of rotation or simply become overshadowed by new and shiny products and begin collecting dust. This feels especially true now that we’re increasingly obsessed with the new, the next and the latest formulas; it’s easy to forget those products we’ve loved dearly and, for one reason or another, overlooked and have relegated to the back of our bathroom cabinets.
And with the world suddenly enamoured with watching Brad Pitt watch his ex-wife Jennifer Aniston accept her recent SAG Award and then congratulate his former flame on the accolade, we couldn’t help but draw comparisons between this iconic pop culture moment and our own beauty habits.
Before you roll your eyes, let us explain.
Just as Brad is now looking to Jen and, we assume, remembering what once was, so too are we looking back at our beauty bad habits to shine a light on those products that always had our backs but we failed to appreciate.
It’s for this reason we asked a handful of our favourite beauty obsessives (men and women who know their skincare and beauty) to share which products they once loved and used regularly only to overlook to experiment a little or simply never restocked and have re-discovered and fallen for again.
Here are the hero products that will never let you down...
The Jennifer: Hourglass’ Ambient Lightning Blush in Radiant Magenta
When it comes to skincare, I’m not typically one to experiment. Once I find something that gives me the results I’m looking for, I will stick with it until it doesn’t.
For a long time, my daily look included Hourglass’s Ambient Lightning Blush in Radiant Magenta, which I first discovered in 2014. As far as powder blushes go, it’s perfect: So fine! So pigmented! So blendable! But after two years of near-constant use, I was curious about what else was out there. Surely it couldn’t just be this one forever? So I strayed, taking up with different liquids and gel formulas in pinks and corals and plums. But then, predictably, I got bored of those too. Earlier this month, rather than heading to the shops to find yet another new product, I reached for the half-finished pan of Ambient Lightning Blush on my dresser. (Seriously, these things last forever.) Lightly brushing it onto the apples of my cheeks, I asked myself the usual question of anyone who ruined a good thing: Why did I stop using this in the first place?

The Jennifer: Tatcha Balanced Pore Perfecting Water Gel Moisturizer
Like many of us, I have struggled with challenging skin. I have dry/combination skin that prefers a “less is more” approach. After hearing so many positive reviews about the hydrating powers of hyaluronic acids, I decided to give it a go. Sadly, my skin didn’t appreciate this change in regime and I found myself more prone to break-outs and I wasn’t seeing the results I wanted. I went back to my trusty Tatcha Balanced Pore Perfecting Water Gel Moisturizer and haven’t looked back — it’s the perfect lightweight daily moisturizer for me and the little sprinkle of 23-karat gold dust leaves you with a subtle glow. Besides, who doesn’t like knowing there’s literal gold dust in their moisturiser?
The Jennifer: Sunday Riley UFO Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil
I went to stay at a good friend’s place in New York recently — where this incredible selfie mirror resides — at a time when my skin was playing up more than it had in years. While there, I (naturally) helped myself to her bathroom cabinet and rediscovered Sunday Riley’s UFO Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil, which I used to use years ago and had to tally forgotten about during my short-lived blemish-free period. After a few days of generously helping myself to her bottle, my skin had improved dramatically and on my last night in NYC, she pulled a brand new bottle from her bag and gifted me it. I’ve since been using almost nightly.

The Jennifer: Ellis Faas Silk Veil Foundation
I interviewed Ellis Faas when she came to Australia back in 2015 and she very kindly gifted me a bottle of her miracle Silk Veil Foundation, which, in typical 'me' fashion, I proceeded to drop and smash the following week (a moment of heartbreak that still replays in my head). I've since dabbled with various tinted moisturisers but decided to re-invest in a bottle of Skin Veil this year. It is, hands down, the best foundation I have ever used. Lightweight while still offering full coverage, I only need to use the tiniest amount every day. I’m so glad we’re back together.
