THE IN-TRAY

Good hair summer: how to protect your hair from sun, sand and sea

Maintaining silky, shiny, run-your-fingers-through-it hair in summer need not come at the cost of your morning dip, rooftop day party or poolside jaunt. Incorporate a couple of clever products into your hair routine, and you really can have it all; the waves, the blonde, the fade-free colour, the long and strong — all of it. Here’s everything you need to know.

If you love a dip on a hot day: bolster hair strength with a treatment mask

Exposure to chlorine and salt water can create dry, knot-prone hair that’s not only more susceptible to breakage but is also a whole lot less shiny and swooshy. So, if a morning beach dip or after-hours splash in the pool is a calendar regularity for you, invest 10 minutes of your time each week in a strengthening treatment mask. Our favourites are Olaplex’s No. 3 Hair Perfector and the Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair!™ Deep Conditioning Hair Mask.

Out in the sun? Your hair needs protection too!

We’re well-versed on the damage heat tools can have on our hair, but let’s not forget how imperative heat protection is before stepping out on a scorching summer day. Our tip? Look to leave-in mists with UV and thermal protection properties. AVEDA’s NutriPlenish™ Leave In Conditioner Spray is formulated with a naturally-derived UV filter that keeps hair shiny, manageable and at its best and brightest colour. Meanwhile, Bumble and bumble’s Heat Shield Thermal Protection Mist protects hair up to 232C to prevent breakage, frizz and the drying effects of the sun.

If you’ve been applying SPF to your hair part: stop to consider your scalp

A scalp scrub is the easiest way to thoroughly remove product build-up from the day and give your hair the best opportunity for growth, strength and shine. That, and removing bits of sand that could be mistaken for dandruff upon first glance! GOOP’s G.TOX Himalayan Salt Scalp Scrub Shampoo is satisfyingly mousse-y and grainy, leaving your hair and scalp feeling cleaner than ever before.

Colour maintenance is key if you’re blonde or sporting a fresh dye

Chlorine-green, sun-bleached yellow and compromised colour aren’t the names of the game when there’s minimal time for a salon session between beach days and evenings out. Oribe’s Bright Blonde Shampoo and Conditioner are formulated with pure violet and pearl pigments to correct brassiness and unwanted tones while also moisturising and repairing damaged hair. They do all the work while you follow your usual shampoo routine! For coloured hair, try Shu Uemura’s Color Lustre Brilliant Glaze Thermomilk – it negates colour fading, adds a lacquer-like shine, and insulates the hair to protect from the elements.

For extra protection, keep these in your bag

If you’re the type to go directly from beach to bar, keep a nourishing hair oil and wet hair-friendly brush within arm’s reach so you never have to go into damage control. Gisou’s Honey Infused Hair Oil polishes unruly ends to leave your hair shiny, nourished and strengthened, and a quick brush-through en route (try a Tangle Teezer and you’ll never look back) will save you from more stubborn knots later down the track.
