It’s been a year. We may have kissed 2020 goodbye – and by kissed, we mean shoved out of the way – but 2021 still kept us on our toes. Despite the ups, downs and turnarounds, we looked to our favourite makeup products to get us through Zoom calls, picnics and walking dates.
So, as an ode to the year that was, we’ve recapped some of the best makeup products of 2021 – and the list may just surprise you…
First up, a wig… for your brows! A new launch from Too Faced this year, this brow gel is the easiest way to achieve full, fluffy, filled in brows. As you brush it on, it cleverly attaches tiny fibres to your brows, providing the illusion of brow extensions in just a few seconds flat. No brow appointment? No worries!
Byredo’s sumptuous, silky, lightweight lipsticks look just as good on your lips as the packaging does in your hand. The formula has a high colour payoff in both matte and satin finishes – and it won’t bleed through your next Friday night drinks or dinner plans.
A lip balm in liquid form, this favourite from Westman Atelier feels pillowy, non-sticky and blesses your lips with an effortless, sheer wash of colour. Swipe it on for a touch of glamour – and simultaneously treat your lips with organic jojoba, almond and argan oils. Our pick? ‘Chou Chou’ for an everyday throw-on and ‘Ma Puce’ for that just-bitten-lip look.
One for the oil-prone, this tinted moisturiser provides you with a blurred, natural finish that errs on the matte side – without being too matte. It pairs a lightweight feel with sheer coverage – perfect for the warmer months when you want something that evens out your complexion while keeping shine at bay.
This one’s for those who want a foundation that stays – the kind of staying power that gets you through a 10-hour day of work, a Pilates class and your late-night dinner plans, all while remaining perfectly matte. If you’re nodding yes to all of the above and you haven’t yet tried NARS’ shine-proof foundation, now’s the time.
If you want your skin to look – and feel – like skin (but more even-toned, hydrated and dewy), ILIA has you covered with this does-it-all tinted face serum. Its vegan, mineral SPF formula provides just the right amount of coverage and is infused with ingredients like niacinamide and hyaluronic acid to give your skin some love.
A fan favourite for many years, By Terry’s crease-free cream eyeshadow stick in this bronzy, sultry shade seems to win the hearts of just about everyone who tries it. It can be used on the lids and lower lash-line (for the easiest smoky eye you ever did see) and you don’t even need a brush – just swipe it on and blend with your ring finger. Talk about foolproof!
ICYMI, this multitasking formula is like a real-life Insta filter. Whether you wear it on its own, underneath your usual foundation to impart a ‘lit from within’ look or even mixed with your usual base, Charlotte Tilbury’s bestselling glow-boosting illuminator leaves your skin looking juicy, dewy and plump.
We’re not surprised that Kosas’ hydrating, creamy concealer dominated the 2021 makeup bestseller list – its medium coverage and peptide-packed formula brightens up the eye area and perfectly blends into the skin as a spot treatment. Plus, its full of so many skin-loving ingredients – like arnica and hyaluronic acid – that it doubles as an eye cream, too.
Meet the favourite tubing mascara in town. It’s a vegan, smudge-proof formula that unleashes some pretty impressive lash drama. Since it’s tubing, it glides off effortlessly and gently in warm water, so you won’t have the runny ‘mascara eyes’ post-cleanse. The best part? 5% of the proceeds from each mascara sold go towards Hourglass’ mission to secure civil rights for animals, so not only is it a win for your lashes, but a win for our furry friends, too.
