THE IN-TRAY

How to give yourself a lip facial (they deserve it)

When was the last time you really thought about your lips? We spend so much time on our daily skincare routine—meticulously applying serums, oils, essences and moisturisers—but often lips don’t experience the same amount of love. A quick slick of balm when you think of it, or the odd scrub before you pop on a bold lip is a good start, but we think there’s more that can be done to really show your lips some TLC — especially in winter. Think about it: just as the right skincare maximises your makeup, a little pout prep will help smooth away flakes and hydrate for a longer-lasting lip look.

So, we’re breaking down the different ways you can give your lips a nourishing, hydrating treatment with some added colour along the way. Think of these steps like a lip facial—and thank us later for the softest, brightest lips of your life.

STEP 1: GET SCRUBBING (GENTLY)

Between arctic winter winds and your heater blasting non-stop, it’s no surprise your lips could be feeling (and looking) seriously dry. The first step to getting them back on track, and so that subsequent lip products you apply afterwards sink in, is a scrub.

The key with a lip scrub is to apply it gently, as the skin on your lips is quite thin and fragile, you don’t want to be too rough and cause any discomfort. Frank Body’s Lip Scrub contains a delicious mix of ground Robusta coffee and coffee seed oil, plus raw sugar and cold-pressed macadamia oil—all of which are rich in fatty acids and antioxidants. And the best part of applying this one? Once you’ve gently buffed away the layer of dry skin, you can lick off the excess sugar.

For a scrub-meets-balm hybrid try Glow Recipe’s Watermelon Glow Lip Pop. Its no-rinse formula is infused with hydrating watermelon extract, flower-derived AHA and coconut flower sugar which melt into your lips after you’ve scrubbed for long-lasting hydration. Plus, the unique formula adjusts to the pH of your lips once you’ve applied it, leaving a hint of tint that’s unique to you. The watermelon in this not only hydrates but contains and anti-inflammatory properties to soothe angry lips.

STEP 2: TRY A TREATMENT OR MASK

If you’re going to take the time to lay on the couch soaking in a sheet mask or sleep in a hair mask, then you may as well lather a mask on your lips while you’re at it, right? A popular choice for dehydrated lips amongst our MECCA Chit Chat Facebook group is the Summer Friday Lip Butter Balm.

It’s the latest launch from the Insta-famous brand and is formulated with rich plant-derived butters to give even the driest of lips a break from feeling tight and uncomfortable. With added shea and murumuru seed butters to heal and condition, this buttery lip balm offers instant hydration and creates a flexible barrier to seal in moisture. Layer it on and try wearing it overnight.

If a lightweight serum is more your thing, Verso offer a serum that not only remedies dry, chapped lips but also lips that may be thinning or losing their fullness over time. It’s enriched with the brands patented Retinol 8 complex to stimulate collagen synthesis—which helps to improve texture and tone—and hyaluronic acid to plump and hydrate lips. La Mer’s Lip Volumizer offers similar results with a soft, sheen-like finish.

STEP 3: BATHE LIPS IN A BALM

By far the biggest lip staple in winter, a good balm can really change the way your lips look and feel with continued use. Take Sol de Janeiro’s Brazilian Kiss Cupuacu Lip Butter, a deliciously scented, multi-tasking lip balm that’s infused with butters and oils so hydrating it can also soothe and heal dry skin on your cuticles, face or elbows. Plus, the Doce de Leite scent will keep you coming back for more.

If you’re after a protective lip balm that feels like wearing nothing at all, then this fuss-free Malin+Goetz Lip Moisturiser is a winner (perfect for the man in your life who’s suffering from dry lips) as it’s clear, easy to apply and doesn’t have a scent if that’s more your (or their) thing.

STEP 4: AN OIL TO FINISH

Lip oils are definitely having a moment and rightly so, they give you the nourishing benefits of a treatment with an editorial makeup finish—what’s not to love? Ciate’s Fruit Burst Lip Oil is a mix between an oil and a gloss formula and can be applied before or after your chosen lip colour for hydrating results.

The sheer finish of Jouer Lip Oil makes it super versatile and easy to incorporate into any makeup look. It’s infused with jojoba seed and apricot oils and provides you with a high-shine finish without even a hint of stickiness. Similarly, the Kosas Wet Lip Oil Gloss provides a comfortable, vinyl-like finish and is available in a line-up of high-impact colours for when you really want to make a lip statement.
