Behind the scenes with makeup artist Victoria Baron

For this month’s campaign, we collaborated with leading editorial makeup artist Victoria Baron to create a series of vibrant and graphic eye looks. Inspired by the new-season products at her fingertips—“The colour payoff in the Kevyn Aucoin Electropop Eyeshadow Palette is insane!”—Baron’s enthusiasm was channelled into four high-impact looks that feature on our store windows and on our website. “I’m loving all of this colour,” says Baron. “I’m really excited to be playing with all these new shapes on eyes, too.”

Photographed by Vogue regular Duncan Killick, come behind the scenes with us on set for a glimpse of Baron’s razor-sharp brush skills.

TMM: What’s inspiring you creatively at the moment?
VB: “I’m loving the colour combinations and textures in nature. I recently hung out with a few peacocks in Tasmania and was captivated by the patterns and intensity of the feathers. I’ve been looking at beetles, butterflies, shells and fish. All fascinating inspiration for makeup.”

Tell us about your favourite beauty moments.
“I’d have to say my most special beauty moment was having a model run to my chair when I had first started doing runway shows. I had wondered if l was ever going to be good enough for that to happen! I’ve been lucky enough to travel the world and Australia, worked with the most talented creatives, picked a red lipstick with Rihanna, and managed to wake up every day to a job l love.”

What are your top beauty tips?
“Many of us do our makeup on autopilot mode, where every part of our face is overdone. I think pulling back on a feature can really highlight another. More is not always more! Another tip, I always use an eye primer before applying eyeshadow to intensify the colour and for crease-proof staying power. Always, always curl your lashes before mascara. And my last tip, sometimes I turn a pimple into a freckle if it can’t be hidden!”

What are some products you can’t live without personally?
“I have a very small personal makeup kit and the Mecca Cosmetica Lit From Within Primer is always in use. My other favourites are Ellis Faas Skin Veil Foundation, Byredo Gypsy Water, NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Red Square, Kevin Aucoin The Volume Mascara, and Mecca Cosmetica Individual Lashes.“

What’s in your kit that you can’t live without?
“I always have some sort of face roller in my kit. It’s almost like a daily ritual before I start applying makeup. For a lymphatic-drainage-wake-up-your-face start to the process! I think it makes a huge difference to the final makeup look.”

What’s your advice for those intimidated by colour?
“Start small with colour if you’re scared and close to the lash line to avoid looking like an ‘80s nightmare! I also believe that you shouldn’t get stuck on rules. I think everyone can wear any colour—it just needs to be applied in the right shape for your eye.”
