Backstage Beauty Report: SS18

The Best Beauty Trends Spotted at Fashion Month

And so, another fashion month draws to a close. From New York to London, Milan and Paris, four weeks of runway shows and street-style posturing is done and dusted for another season, leaving behind a trail of wardrobe inspiration—and new beauty moves to try now. The Spring/Summer ’18 Ready-to-Wear collections were awash with bold colour, feminine lines, contrasting textures and playful embellishment; elements that were reflected in the five stand-out beauty trends we spied backstage and on the runway.

The only thing to make more appearances on the runway than Kaia Gerber (Cindy Crawford’s daughter, for the uninitiated) and the Hadid girls combined? Exaggerated winged liner and dramatic cat eyes. This dialled-up version—as seen at Miu Miu, Marc Jacobs and Tom Ford—is not your everyday flicked liner; think elongated Cleopatra shapes, graphic lines and inky-black colour. Make like the Nike swoosh—and just do it.

Warmer weather and lazy days call for less time spent with hairstyling tools. Cue ‘lived-in’ hair. Our favourite alternative to the bouncy beach waves of the past, this nonchalant approach is the ultimate cool-girl hair and requires minimal fuss; just add a hint of shine to keep tresses looking polished and healthy. We’re loving the looks from Isabel Marant, Adam Selman and Alexander Wang for our inspiration.

Festival beauty took on high fashion with glitter, jewelled colour and embellishment appearing in beauty looks at Undercover, Jeremy Scott and Stella Jean. The next iteration of the metallic trend, this is all about adding texture to shine via glitter topcoats, crystal accents and iridescent finishes. Our top tip: pare down this playful look with fresh, dewy skin to keep it polished.

A more considered approach to a classic crimson pout, the ‘lobster’ lip popped up in shows across all four weeks, with standout looks at Max Mara, Sies Marjan and Marco de Vicenzo. Perfectly pitched between ‘wearable’ and ‘fashion-forward’, this refreshing hue is more flattering than blue-based reds and feels oh-so-right for the Australian summer. Add killer sunnies—and you’re good to go.

Proof that colour is cool again. The perfect antidote to months of no-makeup makeup, shift into the new season with a playful flash of colour across the eyes. We love the forest green, baby blues and Sunny Boy orange as seen at Missoni, Marni and Delpozo. And fear not: this kaleidoscopic return does not spell the end to the nude lipsticks you’ve been hoarding; a neutral lip is the best way to temper this splash of colour.
