Now’s the time to adopt a skincare mentality for your hair and scalp—here’s how to it

Our faces are bright and glowy, and our pores, refined, but BOY have some of us neglected the remainder (and therefore the majority) of our skin.

With more time on our hands, skincare routines that physically cannot be added to, and Drunk Elephant’s explosive launch into hair and body, there’s no excuse not to transfer our skincare knowledge to our limbs.

It’s about time we shared the love, right? Our bodies deserve what our faces have (active cleansers, juicy serums, rich hydrators and the like), so as of right this very second, we’re making a pledge to adopt a skincare mentality for our entire body—including our scalp.

To keep it easy, we’ve simplified this new mentality into four (and a half) easy steps, with the game-changing products to boot. Today, we’re taking a new look at hair care.

Think of shampoo as cleanser—it clears away dirt, product and natural oil build up, and preps your hair for serums and treatments. You could go for traditional foaming (or in hair terms, lathering) formulas like Drunk Elephant’s Cocomino Glossing Shampoo and Living Proof’s Perfect Hair Day Shampoo, or oil-based cleansers, like IGK’s Smoke & Mirrors Conditioning Cleansing Oil and Shu Uemura’s Cleansing Oil Shampoo Gentle Radiance Cleanser. And if you’re wondering if the double cleanse process still applies, it actually always has—rinse and repeat is the O.G. double cleanse.

Whether it’s chemical (AHAs, BHAs, glycolic and the like) or physical (coffee, walnut, sugar), a scrub or exfoliant will do wonders for your scalp, like it does your face. Applied with a good head massage, a scalp scrub will work to rapidly breakdown and dissolve dead skin cells and styling product build-up. Like it would for your pores, this will ensure your follicles are cleared from excess sebum and blockage, encouraging faster and healthier hair growth. Drunk Elephant’s T.L.C. Happi Scalp Scrub is both chemical and physical, with a supercharged blend of AHA and BHA acids in addition to plant-derived granules. Other favourites include IGK’s Low Key Cleansing Walnut Scalp Scrub and Frank Body’s Caffeinated Scalp Scrub.

On surface level, oils and conditioners will ensure your hair is soft, shiny, and dare we say it; glowing. Like moisturiser for your skin creates an instant and noticeable difference (while working all day or night for the long term), your conditioner—whether wash-out or leave-in—will do the same. Most, if not all, of our hair brands serve up a thirst-quenching conditioner (scroll through them here). New conditioners in at MECCA are Drunk Elephant’s Cocomino Marula Cream Conditioner, and Sol de Janeiro’s Brazilian Joia Strengthening and Smoothing Conditioner (yes, the same Sol de Janeiro serving up your favourite body moisturiser. To lock it all in with oils, we rate Drunk Elephant’s Wild Marula Tangle Spray (we use their Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil to lock in our skincare, too), and Shu Uemura’s Essence Absolue Nourishing Protective Oil.

Your leave-in stylers and treatments; think of them as your serums and actives. Whether for your scalp or ends, hair serums will ensure your hair is at its optimal health—especially if you get your hair coloured or heat styled regularly. There are a bunch of hair serums out there, whichever you use really just depends on your desired outcome. Formulated by skincare brands, Omorovicza and Dr. Barbara Sturm’s scalp serums will ensure scalp health and clarity for stronger, shinier hair.

When your hair and scalp aren’t living up to its full potential, give it a boost (once a week is fine!) with a mask. They’ll work to intensely nourish the hair, rebalance the scalp, and ultimately give your hair a new lease on life (just like a hydrating or detoxifying mask would for your face).
