THE IN-TRAY

We spent the day with Terry de Gunzburg…

…and learnt life lessons, the secret to glowing skin, and why it pays to have friends in high(-heeled) places.

By Terry founder Terry de Gunzburg is something of a legend around these parts. A visionary who brought light into makeup years ahead of the pack, she revolutionised the role of skin care in makeup, and is the creator of cult products such as Ombre Blackstar, Baume de Rose and YSL’s Touché Éclat.

In Australia (“I love Australia! If I was younger, I would move here.”) for a series of press events, workshops and masterclasses recently, we spent the day with the beauty doyenne who enthusiastically shared her pro tips and tricks, peppered her advice and words of wisdom with anecdotes from her career and gave us a peek into her future. Here’s what we discovered:

1. THE POWER OF PINK
“First attract light, then reflect glow. I always include pink and coral [pigments] in my products. [They] diffuse light and makes you glow; even if you don’t see the colour, you see the glow. There’s no life without light.”

2. THE TRUTH ABOUT FRENCH-GIRL BEAUTY
“It’s very basic and very confident. The Parisienne, they’re not at all beauty or fashion victims; they don’t care for trends. They [just] believe they can do it better than you!”

3. IN GOOD COMPANY
After leaving her medical studies, de Gunzburg completed a summer course at the Carita institute in Paris, returning to the famed beauty school as Creative Director. Countless students passed through Carita’s doors during her 10-year tenure, including François Nars and Laura Mercier.

4. NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF A BOLD LIP
“Red lipstick is like high heels; it gives you ‘face language’, like body language.”

5. NOT ALL IN-FLIGHT ROUTINES ARE CREATED EQUAL
“I use Baume de Rose on my lips and nails, Liftessence Oil Elixir on my face, arms and feet—I’m spoilt!—then lock it all in with the Hydra-Éclat Mask.” Take note.

6. ON HER PASSION PROJECTS
“I love interior design,” de Gunzburg explained as she told us she was opening a lifestyle store opposite the By Terry flagship in Galerie Vero-Dodat in Paris’ 1st arrondissement (the same neighbourhood as the Palais-Royal and Le Louvre). “This is my passion. [It’s] all for home—interior design, china, super affordable tableware, curating young artists. For the opening, I’ve reproduced what I used to have. Next season, we’ll have stuff I’ve collaborated on.”

7. WELL-HEELED FRIENDS ARE THE BEST KIND OF FRIENDS
De Gunzburg counts both Manolo Blahnik and Christian Louboutin as dear friends. Such good friends, in fact, they send the style maven shoes on the regular. (How do we get in on this group chat?)

8. SECRET SKIN-CARE MOVE #39
Emulsify Cellularose Oil Cleanser with—wait for it—micellar water“ It gives you the extra benefits of the active ingredients, including rose-stem cells, of both products to help purify, detoxify and soothe the skin—which you won’t get from using simple water.” De Gunzburg performed this genius trick at our in-house artistry workshop before removing with a hot towel and finished by applying face cream.

9. HER FIRST JOB OUT OF BEAUTY SCHOOL WAS FOR VOGUE
“I worked with Helmut Newton, Guy Bourdin, Patrick Demarchelier…” and her favourite model, Linda Evangelista—“she has such a versatile quality. And the shape [of her face]? Everything is amazing.”

10. HER TREND PREDICTIONS FOR 2018
“I feel like we’re almost done with the very, very heavy [makeup]. I think sheer but flawless skin will come back in the 2018 season—I think it’s super sophisticated.”

11. ON CAREER HIGHS—AND HIGHLIGHTERS
“Touché Éclat is at the MOMA in New York with my name next to it. I’m proud of my 15-year relationship with Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge. That is really something that I’m very proud of, I’m very happy. It was absolutely…it was a legacy. It’s great!”

12. THE BEST ADVICE SHE’S RECEIVED
“Follow your intuition, do what you want to do but…go beyond the boundaries of your possibilities.”

13. BESPOKE BEAUTY IS THE NEXT FRONTIER
“Next for me, it’s really to reintroduce the Haute Couleur range (FYI: this is By Terry’s personalised service that creates makeup tailored specifically to the customer’s own skin tone and colouring), and bring it to very major capital cities like maybe [Sydney], New York. It’s already in Paris, London, Hong Kong. It’s a completely new access to ultimate luxury—bespoke, only for you, made by us. Unique products for a unique person.” Watch this space.
