How multi-hyphenate Shentel Lee is dealing with her kids and WFH

Multi-hyphenate Shentel Lee (she’s a graphic designer, owns a jewellery label Bowerhaus and also a hair accessories brand, and yes, she’s an influencer and mother of two boys) is honest about self-isolation with her two sons. “The first week was testing, the second week was bloody hard, but by week three we settled into the routine. I won’t lie, there has been meltdowns often!” says Lee, who has been charting the progress (and, humour) of dealing with her two sons, Benjamin, seven, and Kingston, five, doing their schooling from home.

ON SELF-ISOLATING WITH HER TWO SONS

“I think they love having their parents’ full attention 24/7. Mummy and daddy aren’t going to work so for them it’s like living out a weekend every single day,” she says. “I think the hardest part has been the home-schooling and trying to balance work with it. There are days when I just want to forget about logging into all of their Zoom classes and focus purely on my businesses, but it just isn’t possible. I have to say my daily focus has shifted — the kids’ education is now my full-time job.”

They’re doing “bad crafting, watching old VHS cassette videos, listening to records, playing board games and a hell of a lot of gardening,” says Lee. “Oh, and lots of free time on a little gem of a thing — the iPad!”

ON HOW SHE’S DEALING WITH WFH

“I guess the discipline to just leave mum at the door and sit and work with screaming kids around me is how I work best,” she says. With work in Australia as well as Malaysia, “for my staff, it was a big shift from our normal operations,” she adds, pointing to her Malaysian-based staff who are working within tighter governmental restrictions. “It has not been business as usual. Technology is enabling to keep it all together. Whatsapp has been the way we have all been staying connected through multiple work groups — it’s basic, but it’s been working well.”

HER BEAUTY TIPS AND TRICKS WHEN STUCK AT HOME ALL DAY

In the morning, Lee reaches for her Westman Atelier Vital Skin Foundation Stick. “I find with a bit of a face on I feel more confident, especially with all the Zoom meetings from home. I apply this just under my eyes to cover the dark bags. I love how easily it glides on and blends in my skin.” Then, she uses the MECCA MAX Triple Threat Face Shaper Powder — the bronzer and blush goes on her cheeks as well as her eyes as eyeshadow. “The trio palette is so versatile.” Then lastly, it’s the Mecca Cosmetica Lip De-Luscious. “It’s the perfect balm with a hint of colour.”

In the evenings, she cleanses her face with Shiseido’s Future Solution LX Extra Rich Cleansing Foam followed by her favourite mist, Dermalogica Antioxidant Hydramist (“it’s my can’t-live-without”). Then it’s Drunk Elephant’s Lala Whipped Cream (“that name is 100 percent correct, it’s so whipped and fluffy”) and “once that’s all set in place, about 10 minutes later, I apply Go-To Face Hero face oil all over my face, lips and hands. I’m really into face oils right now.”
