Few love the sun more than Melbourne-born Lucy Folk. The instantly likeable jewellery designer spends up to five months a year living our dream and chasing Summer from Noosa to Barcelona to Marrakesh, though not without sunscreen. Having recently transplanted herself and Lucy Folk HQ from Melbourne to Bondi—just in time for a Sydney Summer—the long-time friend of MECCA invited us to her gorgeous new beachside apartment to talk travel, her wanderlust-inspired new store, and the product obsession she buys in multiple.

ON HER FUR SANDAL OBSESSION:

"I feel like my style is quite kooky; I’d call it comfortable, eclectic, colourful, and relaxed. It’s not very structured, reasonably casual, and I’m very drawn to textures and prints. I also wear a lot of fluffy sandals—they’re my thing. I love that you can wear them all year round. I’ve got a couple of Marni ones and a new Gucci pair—I’m really into a fur sole— and I wear them with socks too. Socks and sandals, that’s my inner Austrian coming out!"

ON THE MOVE FROM MELBOURNE TO BONDI:

"There’s a really good energy here [in Bondi] and I love the proximity to the beach. For me, water is very nurturing. I feel like you want to be more natural when you’re here too, like you’ll go straight to dinner from the beach in your bathers and your shorts and not really care. But I also like the balance between being somewhere like this and then somewhere like Paris and those amazing cities where you can dress up a bit."

ON BEING TERRIBLE AT PACKING:

"I’m lucky that I get to spend about four or five months a year travelling, mostly for work, but packing is definitely my least favourite part. Packing light is the key but I’m terrible at it because I always take so much luggage. I also take my clothes on hangers because it really helps when I’m unpacking, especially when I’m going to fashion weeks and you need to have good outfits. I find that hotels never have as many hangers as I need so I’m always calling hotel reception asking for 20 more! I have this huge jewellery box with the entire Lucy Folk collection in it that I take everywhere when I travel overseas too. It’s amazing!"

HER TRAVEL ESSENTIALS:

"My bathroom bag takes up a quarter of my suitcase. For the plane I swear by This Works In Transit Spray-On Moisture, and I always have sunscreen with me, even when I’m not in the sun I still use it. I’ve been a long-time fan of Malin & Goetz Eucalyptus Deodorant as well. And I never travel without perfume; Gypsy Water is my favourite, I just love it. I always have This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray with me too. Always. I love it so much that I’ve got one at every base: up in Noosa, one in Melbourne, one here in Bondi."

ON HER NEW BONDI STORE:

"I just opened my store here in Hall Street. It’s called Playa, which means ‘beach’ in Spanish, and it’s really inspired by my travelling and the way that you shop on holidays when you’re just looking for something that suits your mood. I just wanted to create a space that was a destination that encapsulated the beach but with an international mindset. Bondi is really whatever you want it to be. All my closest friends are here and it just feels great."
