MECCA MUSE

CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG:
ACTRESS & MUSICIAN

51 FILMS. 5 ALBUMS. 2 VERY FAMOUS PARENTS. 1 OF THE MOST BUZZED-ABOUT BEAUTY COLLABORATIONS OF THE YEAR.

No one wears effortless, French-girl beauty quite like Charlotte Gainsbourg. With English actress and singer Jane Birkin and French singer Serge Gainsbourg for parents, it was inevitable that Charlotte would be blessed with the cool gene. A successful singer, songwriter, and actress in her own right, we’ll be seeing a lot more of her in 2017. The mother of three appears in three new films and an album—her fifth—drops in September; all while she’s been quietly working behind the scenes with fellow Frenchman François Nars on his latest limited-edition offering. The MECCA Memo were given a sneak peek at the 15-piece Charlotte Gainsbourg for NARS collaboration and an audience with Charlotte to discuss everything from her understated approach to style and the lessons she learnt from her beauty-icon mother, to her favourite product.

TMM: What do you think makes a woman beautiful?
CG: "We are all so different. This is what makes women special."

TMM: Who are your beauty icons?
CG: "My mother (Jane Birkin), Charlotte Rampling, and Brigitte Bardot."

TMM: What’s your earliest memory of your mother and makeup and how did she influence your own relationship with beauty?
CG: "I remember when I was younger she would usually put makeup on in a taxi, when she would take me to school. Blush was always something she did with her fingers; she did everything with her fingers. All her gestures I probably now copy later on in my life. The main thing she taught me was to not put too much makeup on, she always complained that she used too much in her younger years. She taught me to keep your real features and to not try to look like anyone else."

TMM: If you could offer your younger self one piece of advice what would it be?
CG: "I think when I was younger I understood early on that my qualities were not my looks. Especially with all the beautiful women in my family—my mother, my grandmother, my stepmother. But today, when I look at pictures of myself from back then I think oh, I was quite nice. I could have enjoyed myself much, much more."

TMM: Tell us about the inspiration behind Charlotte Gainsbourg for NARS?
CG: "This is a very personal collection to me; I created it around my own exact beauty needs. I couldn’t do something that was the opposite of my beauty philosophy so it had to be quite natural."

TMM: What was it about you that made François Nars want to collaborate do you think?
CG: “I really don’t know! We met during a photoshoot together in New York a few years ago. I was just about to move there and François was very friendly, so warm and caring, and we just clicked. A few years later when he asked me to collaborate with him I was flattered and quite excited because it was such an unusual request for me. I don't typically wear a lot of makeup so I was surprised that he chose me."

TMM: And if you had to choose one product from your collection that you’re proudest of, what would it be?
CG: "The makeup brushes—they are my favourite! I went to art school briefly when I was younger and my father used to take me to these great art supply stores in France. I’ve always had a real love for brushes."

TMM: What do you think is the biggest misconception about you?
CG: "That I am shy. I’m not necessarily shy; I’m more reserved and more comfortable being quiet rather than being an extrovert but that’s just my nature."

TMM: How would you describe your own personal style?
CG: "I wouldn’t say I have a specific style. I wear the same thing for everyday: the same pair of pants, jeans and shoes. I like the idea of almost wearing a uniform. My father used to wear the same clothes everyday. That was him, so maybe I was brought up with the idea that you had a persona. It seemed very easy and there is something very reassuring about it for me."

TMM: If you could only wear one designer for the rest of your life who would it be?
CG: "That’s a hard question! I don’t think I can answer that! I will say my favourites right now are my dear friend Nicolas Ghesquière at Louis Vuitton and Anthony Vaccarello at Saint Laurent."
