Ruby Rose rocks Urban Decay’s Vice Lipstick collection

Urban Decay co-founder Wende Zomnir knew she had found the perfect brand ambassador when she spotted Australian actress and model Ruby Rose. “When I first saw her, I thought she was an amazing fit for us. She embodies beauty with an edge. She’s dangerous. She’s fun. And she is an animal lover. We sort of developed a girl crush on her and were beyond excited when she wanted to work with us to launch the collection.”

The collection she’s talking about is, of course, Vice Lipstick. Recently Zomnir and Rose celebrated the range with an exclusive store visit to Mecca Maxima Chatswood.

On the eve of their visit TMM sat down with Urban Decay co-founder Wende Zomnir to chat about her Ruby Rose fan-girl moment, beauty blunders and why the brand continues to fly off the shelves at Mecca Maxima.

TMM: You are known for your celebrity collaborations—why Ruby Rose?

WZ: “Ruby is just so edgy and cool and I thought she would be fun to work with. Then we met and we hit it off instantly.”

TMM: What do you attribute Urban Decay’s success to?

WZ: “Urban Decay has a clear point of view and is all about the fun of self-expression through makeup. We create high-quality beauty products with innovative packaging and incredible colours.”

TMM: What’s your favourite product?

WZ: “Eyeshadow Primer Potion. It was revolutionary in the industry when we first created it more than a decade ago and it’s still one of the best-selling primers out there now.”

TMM: The colours in the Vice Lipstick range are so diverse—do you have a favourite shade?

WZ: “Right now, I’m obsessed with Vice Lipstick in Afterdark. It’s bright, yet dark. It’s pretty but edgy. It goes with almost every makeup look without being neutral.”

TMM: And what’s the one product you cannot live without?

WZ: “All Nighter Long-Lasting Setting Spray! I want to make sure my makeup stays on as long as I want it to.”

TMM: What is your biggest beauty blunder?

WZ: “I’ve had some beauty mishaps in my time. I’m told, but I’m in total denial, that I had a skunk stripe in my hair. I don’t believe it, but I’m told that it happened. And, I had really scary thin brows because I was on a shoot and a makeup artist took them all away and I felt naked afterwards. I felt really vulnerable and sad. They took so long to grow back!”

TMM: Share with us your biggest beauty sin?

WZ: “I probably don’t wash my brushes enough. Sometimes I just grab a new one!”

TMM: Do you have a go-to look for a night on the town?

WZ: “For a night out, I love to wear Moondust Eyeshadow in Zodiac, it’s this gorgeous deep dark green that makes my green eyes really stand out.”

TMM: Urban Decay’s tagline is beauty with an edge—who sums this up for you?

WZ: “Ruby of course! She’s such a badass.”

TMM: Do you have a beauty icon?

WZ: “My mum.”

TMM: What three words sum you up?

WZ: Feminine, dangerous and fun!

TMM: What’s coming up for Urban Decay?

WZ: “We can’t divulge our secrets, but we’re always working on more innovative new products with high-performance formulas. I love to create palettes so you will definitely see more of those in the future.”
