We’re all talking about … the new queen of palettes

THE LATEST LIMITED-EDITION PALETTE FROM MECCA MAX HAS LANDED, AND SHE’S ALREADY BEING TALKED ABOUT AS MAKEUP ROYALTY. WITH 15 SIZZLING SHADES, FROM MOLTEN METALLICS TO CREAMY MATTES, IT’S TIME TO BOW DOWN TO DESERT QUEEN.

As a self-confessed beauty obsessive, I’m the first to admit my makeup collection is somewhat out of control. I hoard highlighters, lust after lipsticks and fangirl over new foundations. Don’t even mention my devotion to blush (I own every Hourglass cheek colour there is). And then along comes a new-fangled palette that I probably don’t need. But, like a magpie attracted to gleaming objects, I swoop in.

So, you can imagine my sheer excitement when I heard MECCA MAX was launching a new face and eye palette, the latest iteration of its hugely popular Beauty Queen. Quick footnote on Beauty Queen—customers still ask after it long after it sold out in a few months. The new younger sister of the original Queen is quite different, but equally as pretty on the eye and even more versatile.

Unlike her shimmering predecessor, Desert Queen combines four matte shades and eleven metallics. The inclusion of mattes means you have buttery-soft base shades and transition colours to start your look off before dipping into the precious metals. And it doesn’t stop at the eyes. Some of the shades can be worn as a reflective highlight on the temples, while others still add a warm flush to the cheeks. The colours are mostly warm tones (hence the desert theme), except for a striking violet that Prince himself would have loved.

Viewed as a whole, the shades are reminiscent of a sun setting over a scorched desert—bright ruby reds melt into molten golds and burnt oranges complement rich browns. It’s the prettiest apocalypse you can imagine. When it comes to texture, the shadows glide like silk and blend seamlessly in just a few brush strokes. It’s the type of palette that will prompt ‘What are you wearing on your eyes?’ queries all day long. It certainly did for me.

The one dilemma (if you can call it that) I faced was choosing the first colour to apply because they are all so incredibly gorgeous. Each shade is akin to a mini artwork in the pan, especially those with a marble effect, and they deliver incredible payoff. If she’s anything like Beauty Queen, this regal wonder will be snapped up in a hot minute, so get your hands on it and prepare to rock some seriously fire looks.
