A winged eye is timeless. But what happens when you take a classic and flip it on its head? Magic. We’re embracing a new type of winged eye and swapping the standard black flick for a crisp white one instead, and the results are nothing short of magic. We spoke to Joel Babicci—the makeup artist behind this white-hot eye—about what inspired him and why it’s one to try as the summer festival season approaches.
Lids up first: start by applying a layer of NARS Eyeshadow Duo in ‘Isolde’. This warm shade can be packed on using a finger or using a domed eyeshadow brush. According to Babicci, any lighter shade of eyeshadow will make a great base for a white wing; “the colour on the lid can be adapted to suit your individual skin tone—you can even try the white liner on its own,” he says. For the wing itself, use Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in ‘Snow’ and be sure to work quickly, as this one sets almost immediately on the eyelid.
The shape and application of the wing can be applied in various ways—from bold to just a hint of a flick—and for Babicci, it was the appeal of a classic look and wanting to create something fresh and summery that led him to using a white liquid eye liner. “I feel that using the white liner makes this look more modern.” For lashes that hold their curl and add definition to the look try Westman Atelier Eye Love You Mascara.
Skin takes a backseat with this look, but any base (full coverage or ‘barely there’) will work. Babicci opts for fresh skin with only a hint of coverage where it’s required which ensures the cheek bones, lips and eyes really stand out. For lips, NARS Lipstick in ‘Dolce Vita’ provides just the right amount of colour and is an all-time favourite of Babicci’s. “I can’t live without this. It gives the perfect amount of natural-looking sheer colour whilst keeping the lips looking healthy and hydrated. I sometimes smudge a tiny bit onto the apples of the cheeks to give the face a natural flush.” For a subtle sheen on the high points of the face, apply RMS Living Luminizer by warming up the product with the fingers and gently pressing it along the tops of the cheekbones. “I love the fresh dewy highlight it adds to the skin without being too shimmery or sparkly.”
