From padded headbands to diamante clips, hair accessories are having a major moment. A quick scan of MECCA HQ reveals one scrunchie, two ribbons and a set of tortoiseshell clips holding back an indecisive fringe—and that’s a quiet day at the office. It started on the runway with designers like Chanel, Prada, Simone Rocha, Miu Miu and Saint Laurent, started cropping up in our saved items on Instagram and very quickly infiltrated the real world. “It’s a really simple way to have a bit of fun with your outfit without going to too much effort,” explains editorial hairstylist Ashleigh Carpenter, and we couldn’t agree more! Here she shows us the best hairstyles to wear with every trending accessory.
Hair clips have been trending for a while now but the new way to wear your slides, snaps and embellished clips? Mix and mismatch. “I really love gold slides with pearls at the moment,” says Carpenter, “but really you can mix anything including shapes and colours.” Her tip? Keep the clips asymmetrical (i.e. on one side of your head) to make a statement without being over the top. To keep your clips in place gently tease the hair underneath the section you want to place the clip, so when you place the clip the hair still looks smooth. Lightly spray with a hairspray or texturising spray after teasing to give the hair a bit of grit and stop it from sliding.

While they might bring back school yard memories, ribbons are back and they’re all grown up. “They look beautiful in hair with soft texture and a half-up, half-down hairstyle,” says Carpenter. To achieve this, prep damp hair with Bumble and bumble Bb.Thickening Great Body Blow Dry Crème and loosely blow dry to create a soft texture. Taking random sections of hair, use a hot curling tong to create imperfect, effortless waves. Spray Hair by Sam McKnight Cool Girl Spray throughout the waves and tousle lightly. When it comes to the ribbon, “rather than tie in a bow which can look preppy, let the ribbon hang relaxed, secured around a hair tie for a more cool-girl look.”

They’re a touch Madonna (Mary not Madge), but padded headbands can really elevate an outfit... quite literally, they give you an extra inch of height. Where to wear this feminine trend? “I think these will be really popular come spring racing carnival but they also look great worn to lunch with a blazer or a cocktail event with a dress.” To start, Carpenter creates volume and a pliable, thicker texture in the hair using Sachajuan Ocean Mist on damp hair and Sachajuan Volume Powder on the roots once dry. Use a tail comb to create a centre part, tucking hair behind the ears before placing on the headband. Ease your way into the trend with black, blue and neutral colour bands—you’ll be in velvet pink in no time.

“This is my favourite trend at the moment, it’s very 70s,” explains Carpenter. While a long silk scarf looks amazing tied around a low ponytail or bun, a shorter silk scarf looks great tied around a top knot. The trick is knotting the scarf around the hair tie first to really secure it, then wrap the scarf around the ponytail or bun. To cut the frizz in Isabella’s hair, Carpenter uses Living Proof No-Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream when wet and then Living Proof No-Frizz Instant De-Frizzer to tame any flyaways once dry.

A nod to the 90s, scrunchies are a playful way to make your everyday updo look more considered, as well as being cute accessories they can also be functional in reducing ridges and breakage. Slip’s Silk Scrunchies have been specifically designed with this in mind. “Scrunchies can be a great option to help reduce breakage and create less stress on the hair, in particular silk scrunchies as the material is so soft, there are no snags and ridges left in the hair.” To get the textured low bun, Carpenter uses Bumble and bumble Dry Spun Texture Spray when styling and finished off with Hair by Sam McKnight Modern Hairspray to get a super sleek finish.
