The Look

Inspired by legendary rock chick Patti Smith, this smouldering look is all about sooty, smokey eyes and blacker-than-black lashes, tempered by fresh skin and barely-there nude lips—all worn with a nonchalant attitude. We called on Linda Jefferyes—a leading editorial makeup artist to create this month’s how-to series, starting with this modern rock chic look. “This is the real way to do a smokey eye. It’s achievable and not too intimidating,” says Linda.

Step 1
Step 2

Line upper and lower lash lines with By Terry Stylo Blackstar in Smokey Black, then use the fingertips to softly smudge out and diffuse.

Linda’s tip: “Using your finger will give it a not-so-perfect rock look. I like to warm up the tip of the stick on the back of my hand and practice a few strokes, then you have to work quickly.”

Step 3

Apply the dark shade from NARS Eyeshadow Duo in Pandora, glide on above the lash line and blend out to the crease with the Mecca Cosmetica Domed Eye Blending Brush. Using the same brush, bring the colour down onto the lower lash line, focusing on the outer corner.

Linda’s tip: “I know this shade looks super-intense but just build it up and layer; you’ll be surprised how beautifully this blends with the first eyeshadow.”

Step 4

Load up lashes (top and bottom) with layers of By Terry Mascara Terrybly to get eyelashes to pop against the eyeshadow.

Linda’s tip: “Use the silvery shade from the Chantecaille palette like a highlighter, applying to the inner corners and top of the brow bone. This really helps balance the look.”
