Watch: Gemstone eyes are the cool-girl way to do glitter

Glitter eyeshadow doesn’t have to look like a pre-school art project. Take an unexpected colour and an interesting technique and the result is sophisticated, fashion-forward and 100 percent cool-girl approved. Where typically you would take the matte through the crease and the sparkle on the lid—here we’re flipping the script: concentrating the glitter through the crease for a more modern look. It’s the perfect way to add a touch of irony and fun to your makeup without veering kitsch this holiday season.

Here’s how it’s done…

1. Matte first

First, we used a matte shade, NARS Single Eyeshadow in Matcha, to create a base of colour: focusing on the lid and blending upwards to just above the crease. Next, work a slightly deeper colour on the outer corner of the eyes, blending in a 'C' shape to create definition on the outside of the eye. Ensure you take this darker shade under the eye as well, this will balance out the colour on all angles.

2. Glitter second

Now it’s time to add glitter. Using the Urban Decay Stoned Vibes Eyeshadow Palette and a fluffy brush, take the shade ‘Jade’ and build it just above the crease—blending the matte and shimmer shades together till they're seamless (Pro tip: try this with your eyes open so you can see the placement properly). Finish with the same shimmer applied just under the lower lashes (concentrate in the centre, as this will help the eye appear larger).

Get creative – try this look with any of the glitters in this palette, just pair it with a matching matte in step one!

4. Boyish brows

To contradict the glam of the eye, opt for brushed-up, fluffy brows. Use a clear gel (MECCA MAX Brow Guru Clear Control Gel) to keep them in place and looking polished without being overly ‘done’.

5. First base

To keep this look fresh and modern, go for a natural-looking foundation or tinted moisturiser that looks like your skin, only better. We recommend applying your base after the eyes so you can clean up any fall-out or glitter spills with ease. Concealer under the eyes will help tidy up the blending, as well as cancel out any redness or blueness and make the eyes really pop. We used Urban Decay All Nighter Waterproof Full-Coverage Concealer for serious staying power.

6. Jelly lips

For the perfect blend of nothing but something, you can’t go past glossy lips. Morphe Glassified Lip Oil offers that barely-there colour with serious shine.
