Try these four modern looks for Valentine’s Day

While red lips and smoky eyes may be the unequivocal look of love, this month we’re trying something new. MECCA Senior Artist Sally Axford takes a modern approach to date-night makeup—stripping back the coverage, flirting with colour and swiping right on glossy textures. “It’s a great excuse to wear colour and textures you haven’t tried before, but with a bit of an edge,” she says. “Keep skin as bare as you can and opt for cream formulas on the cheeks and eyes—dewy, light-reflective, sensual skin is the best thing you can wear this Valentine’s Day.” Whether for yourself or your S.O., these playful looks are sure to set your heart on fire.

Flirty pop of colour

If you’ve been crushing on colour, now’s the time to have a fling. Inspired by the runway, this simple look takes a hint of hue onto the inner corners of your peepers—creating the perfect excuse to stare longingly into your eyes. Axford’s take: “This bright lilac worn as a liner looks fresh and fun when paired with a peachy balm and dewy cheek, and can be subbed in with any colour you wish for ultimate expression.”

Vampy lips and glossy lids

This look is a fresh take on a date-night smoky eye, trading traditional eyeshadow for a modern, glossy finish. “The lash line was slicked with a bronze lacquer for depth, and creasing on the eye was encouraged to give the look a worn-in feel and a subtle sensuality,” says Axford. It also adds a touch of glimmer. On the lips, Kosas’ limited-edition Valentine’s Day lipstick in Violet Fury, is sure to make hearts beat fast with its ultra-high-pigment hue. “This creamy violet shade is a nice summery alternative to a deep plum, and is much more approachable than its wintery counterpart,” says Axford.

Babydoll lips

While a crimson lip will always have its place come Valentine’s Day, bubblegum pink is the colour we crave. “The lip is so ultra-feminine that it’s almost avoided in the makeup world in favour of more mature colour options. Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to nod back to your childhood Barbie obsession and take ownership of the brightest pink out there,” says Axford. “Anchor the look with fresh skin, peachy cheeks and thick doll-like lashes to make the look more tough than twee.” We say, skip date night and head straight for gals night out instead.

Candy and chocolate

Nothing says romance quite like candy and chocolate and this sensual look delivers in double. Pink eyeshadow is fast cementing itself as an everyday neutral, and when paired with a matte brown lip it’s anything but saccharine. “Make sure skin is glossy to really set off the matte-ness of the eye and lip,” says Axford. Buff NARS Super Radiant Booster onto cheekbones, collarbones and exposed shoulders and watch your skin glimmer in the candlelight.
