Try this: 80s beauty but make it modern

The holiday party invites are rolling in and you better believe that means one thing: time to plan your beauty looks (and an outfit to match if you’re so inclined). This year we’re keeping our usual neutral lip/cheek/eye colours in the cupboard and reaching for 80s-inspired neon blushes, cherry red lipsticks and gilded eyeshadows instead. Tis’ the season after all. See how makeup artist Joel Babicci created this festive look with an 80s twist.

Grab NARS Blush in ‘Amour’ and using a fluffy blending blush work the colour through the crease of the eye (yes, blush can be used as eyeshadow) in a windscreen wiper motion. Once you’re happy with the intensity of the colour through the crease, use the same colour and swap the brush for Rae Morris Jishaku #2 Mini Kabuki. This time, take the colour in an outward direction towards the temples and sweep it down in a ‘c’ shape along the hollows of your cheekbones. The technical term for this application is ‘draping’; it’s like contouring but using a colour instead of a neutral taupe colour. It was big in the 80s and still works as an unexpected way to wear blush today.

To build the look further, take NARS Blush in ‘Gaiety’ and apply it to the apples of the cheeks ensuring you blend both blush colours together for a seamless finish. Now it’s time for glitter. Take the deep pink shade from Stila’s After Hours Eyeshadow Palette and press it on to the eyelids using your finger. Eyeshadows with glitter in them play much nicer on the lid when you press or pat them in gently—there’s minimal fall out and the intensity is always stronger. A few layers of Hourglass Caution Extreme Lash Mascara will add volume and finish off the eyes nicely.

Apply Hourglass Vanish Flash Highlighting Stick in ‘Rose Gold Flash’ directly on to the skin (pay attention to where the light naturally catches: tops of cheekbones, cupids bow and brow bones) and use your fingers to blend the creamy formula. The cool thing about this highlighter? It adjusts to your body temperature to melt easily into the skin. For lips, apply Hourglass Confession Ultra Slim High Intensity Refillable Lipstick in ‘I Crave’, focusing the colour in the middle of the lips initially and then go in with your finger and smudge the pigment outwards. Applying it like this will give the lips a blurred effect and give more of a stained finish. Finish the look off with a quick spritz of Bumble and Bumble Dry Spun Texture Spray for effortless 80s-inspired volume.
