This is how a makeup icon is made: why NARS Orgasm blush is a bestseller

WE’RE TAKING A MOMENT FOR ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC BLUSHES OF ALL TIME—NARS ORGASM. AND THIS MONTH, MECCA PRESENTS THE ORGASM X COLLECTION INSPIRED BY THE ORIGINAL… ARE YOU READY TO BLUSH?

How many makeup products can you think of that have remained a bestseller for over 20 years? Not many, huh? Well, we’re here to tell you that NARS’ Orgasm Blush is that product. To this day, it’s still the number one blush sold in the US. At MECCA it’s the bestselling blush—the powder version is number one and its younger liquid blush sister sits at number two.

We think a blush that pretty much stands the test of time is definitely worth celebrating, so we’re taking a moment to talk all things Orgasm. From makeup artists who use it and royals who wear it on the regular, to the story behind the name and why it’s such a universally flattering shade—here’s everything you need to know about the blush that transforms cheeks around the world. And, if you’re taken by Orgasm, you’ll be excited to hear that the brand are launching an entire collection inspired by their Orgasm X shade (a deeper shade of coral pink compared to the original Orgasm).

THE NAME

It might interest you to know that François Nars actually came up with the name before creating the colour. “I actually first created the name, then the shade—I wanted something shocking,” he said to Allure magazine. In the past he’s told beauty fans that when he named it, he always felt like it was a good way to actually get an orgasm by just buying a blush, saying he always wanted a name that was going to be a bit audacious. Mr. Nars also once admitted that without such an audacious name he didn’t know if it would have become so iconic.

THE SHADE

When it comes to the actual peachy pink shade with flecks of gold, it’s inspired by the natural flush that occurs within your skin when you have an actual physiological orgasm. So, your skin gets all the benefits of a climax in just a few sweeps of blush—who knew?Touted as one of the most ‘universally flattering’ blush shades, makeup artists agree that it does stand above the rest for its versatility. It’s a blush that’s different from all others because it blends warm and cool tones—the mix of peach, pink, and gold are balanced perfectly. That, and the pigment allows for a soft application or a heavy one depending on your mood. Makeup artist Mia Connor says NARS Orgasm has always been a staple in her kit. When I think ‘cult blush’ I instantly think of NARS Orgasm, in fact I cannot think of any other that is so famous for the right reasons. I first came across it when Kimmy Kardashian started wearing it. It’s been a staple in my kit for so many years—I love the colour, the texture and versatility.”

THE FANS

And as for the celebrity following of Orgasm? Well, Meghan Markle discovered it while on the set of Suits. “I love NARS blush in Orgasm. I use it on and off camera because it gives you a nice glow from within,” she told InStyle magazine. Other fans include Emma Stone, who wore the liquid version to the 2017 Oscars after NARS’ very own makeup artist Rachel Goodwin applied it as part of her red carpet look.Kim Kardashian is also a big fan: “My all-time favourite blush is NARS Orgasm,” she told Vogue magazine. Supermodel Giselle Bündchen loves the Orgasm Multiple, telling InStyle magazine via Allure magazine “it gives me a peachy, dewy look like I just came off the beach.” Since its release all those years ago, the brand has launched other incarnations of this iconic shade. From a liquid blush to cream sticks, lip glosses and even a nail polish—this cult shade is so flattering it can be worn across just about every feature. Name another blush that can do that. We’ll wait.
