The NARS Erdem collection is blooming brilliant

London-based fashion designer Erdem Moralioglu has long been enthralled by flowers, and not just for the way they look but for the womanly power they evoke. So, it’s altogether fitting that his first makeup collection, a collaboration with NARS, would be devoted to florals. “I’ve always been fascinated by, and my work will always be about, the exploration of femininity,” he told us. “To me, flowers represent the wonderful strength of the feminine.”

Over two years in the making, the 13-piece capsule collection, titled Strange Flowers, was created in close partnership with Francois Nars, who has designed the beauty looks for Erdem’s runway shows since 2013. Branching out into makeup together was a natural evolution. Strange Flowers made its debut on the runway at Erdem’s Autumn/Winter 2018 show with models showcasing blurred matte lips and smoky eyes. “It’s been wonderful to collaborate with NARS, not only are they extraordinary makeup artists, but also their innovation is incredible.”

The collection plays up striking contrasts, while shades alternate between subtle and saturated, opaque and sheer. “I like the tension between colours in my work,” Moralioglu explains. There are two covetable eyeshadow palettes, blushes, lipsticks, blotting papers that are an accessory in themselves and a highlighting pencil for adding ethereal definition. The standout item? A daring palette of lip powders, a first of it’s kind for NARS.

A sense of romantic nostalgia is evident throughout. Couture-inspired palettes are dressed up in artfully designed compacts printed with floral motifs designed by Moralioglu himself. “This collection is definitely very personal to me,” he adds. “From the packaging to the colours, every detail was something that I was able to collaborate on.” Whether you’re a wallflower or a tall poppy, escape the rule book and embrace florals in surprising ways this winter on your lips, cheeks and eyes.
