It’s not every day that someone stops to admire your cheeks at a restaurant, but that’s exactly what happened to me on a recent outing. There I was scanning the menu at a hip new winery, deliberating over the charred broccoli and heirloom carrots, when the waitress commented on my makeup. “Can I just say, I am loving your blush,” she announced, beaming. “And your contour and highlight are flawless.” For a moment I forgot what I wanted to order and thanked her profusely. All the credit must go to Hourglass though. Specifically, its new Ambient Lighting Edit Palette Volume 4, which delivers light-diffusing, vegan-friendly colour.
Every year during the holiday season, Hourglass releases a highly anticipated edit of its Ambient powders—a limited-edition palette filled with blush, bronzer, highlighter and setting powder. This time around, ramping up excitement even further, Hourglass has created two palettes. Ambient Lighting Edit – Unlocked contains six new shades. Volume 4, on the other hand, is made up of four bestselling shades and two new ones. It also comes packaged in a chic metallic pink compact. Both palettes have beauty junkies furiously hitting the like button on Instagram and wondering about their release date.
I fell for Volume 4 the moment I cracked open its reflective pink case and admired the six painterly shades within. After using it for a few weeks, I have developed my own failproof approach to using it. Start with Dim Light and Diffused Light, both of which can be used to set your foundation and create a soft-focus effect. Contour with Filtered Bronze Light, a warm bronze that imparts the cheekbones with post-vacay glow, and then apply Euphoric Fusion or Luminous Glow to the apples of the cheeks. The first is a blush-meets-highlighter hybrid in a soft lilac finish, while the second is coral-hued blush that’s practically angelic. Finally, I like applying Euphoric Strobe Light with a damp brush to the tops of my cheekbones for a high-wattage highlight.
As with all of Hourglass’ Ambient powders, the shades harbour the brand’s “photoluminescent technology”. Translation: The powders refract light so that your skin appears smooth, luminous and even—never masked. That technology is what makes these powders unique. Also, they are so lightweight you can never go overboard. That the powders are also vegan lends the palette a neat halo. This palette is a one-stop-shop for your complexion—it does it all and then some. You can even use it to create natural everyday eye looks, so it’s the perfect compact for travel. I’ve already added it my summer getaway list.
