1 MAJOR BEAUTY CRIME. 25 HOUSEMATES. INFINITE LESSONS IN BEAUTY THANKS TO HER MAKEUP ARTIST MOTHER.

At The MECCA Memo, we’re always scouting for up-and-coming creatives with whom we can collaborate to help bring our stories to life. Last year, we discovered multi-media artist Kitty Callaghan. The 27-year-old collagist and photographer has talent in spades; her CV boasts collabs with the likes of Ellery, The Kooples, StyleBop, RUSSH, and Harper’s Bazaar. And we love a redhead. All of which proved to be reason enough to invite ourselves over to the Sydney artist co-op she calls home to quiz her on the beauty lessons she learnt from her makeup artist mother, the kick-start that launched her career, and about the time Coldplay’s Chris Martin bought her a drum kit (yes, really).

ON HER ART:

“Collaging is something that I’ve always done ever since I was really young. I guess the game-changer came when I started working for Kym Ellery as her PA about five years ago. After I made her a collaged birthday card, she asked me to do one of my collages for her new prints. Kym’s always been super supportive to anyone around her; if you want to do something she will always try and help you do it. I’m now working towards doing collage that is made completely from my own photos to merge the two mediums together. The time it takes me to create a collage really depends on how in depth the overall mood is and what I can find. I source images from my favorite bookshop, I paint, I cut, I scan, I manipulate. Each one is different.” [See Kitty’s bespoke collages for The MECCA Memo below featuring her favourite products.]

" My mum used to be a makeup artist, so I learnt everything I know about makeup from her. "

ON LIVING IN AN ARTIST’S CO-OP:

“I live in an artist co-op with my boyfriend, who’s also an artist, in Newtown. There are so many different creatives living and working here; painters, musicians, sculptors...I love living in close proximity to so many like-minded creative people. It’s quite an incredible place.”

THE LESSONS SHE LEARNT FROM HER MAKEUP ARTIST MOTHER:

“My mum used to be a makeup artist, so I learnt everything I know about makeup from her. She also had the most amazing perfume collection. She taught me to always moisturize in upward movements and to never sleep with my makeup on. She also introduced me to the NARS Illuminator which I’m obsessed with. I wear it on my cheekbones but also as an eyeshadow because it has a hint of colour but is still quite subtle. You only need the tiniest bit as it goes a really long way.”

ON HER BIGGEST BEAUTY CRIME:

“Remember blue hair mascara? I was going through these photos at my parents’ house recently and I’d totally forgotten about it until I saw them. I didn’t just wear it in my hair either but all through my eyebrows! It was so wrong.”

ON HAVING SENSITIVE SKIN:

“To me, the most important thing you can do for your skin is to wear sunscreen everyday. I have since I turned 18 and it’s crucial for me because I’m so pale. My skin is super sensitive too and I used to get rosacea. I saw a dermatologist but we never really got to the bottom of why but I think stress definitely plays a role for me. I switched to Dermalogica skin care about six months ago and I love it. I use the Microfoliant, Special Cleansing Gel, and their Skin Hydrating Mask. I actually use the mask as a moisturiser every night because it makes my skin feel super soft when I wake up.”

ON HER SIGNATURE SCENT:

“I always carry Byredo Pulp with me wherever I go. I discovered it about a year ago and it’s now my go-to fragrance. It's not the usual scent I would go for because I often find fruity scents quite predictable but I love how unique it smells.  People always stop me and ask me what perfume I’m wearing.”

THE COOLEST THING THAT’S EVER HAPPENED TO HER:

“I’m not sure if I’d call it ‘cool', but perhaps the strangest thing was that time five years ago when a friend and I randomly met Chris Martin from Coldplay in a Sydney café! I’d lost my wallet and was pretty flustered; he was sitting next to me and asked if I was ok; we got chatting and he was telling me all about how he was missing his wife (Gwyneth!). He ended up coming with us to a music store as my friend was looking to buy a drum kit, and as I play drums I was keen to have a look too. He gave us some advice and then insisted on buying it. He said: “I know it seems weird but just let me do it.” So we did. It sounds a little creepy but his offer came from a really nice place.”
